If you’re looking for a good thriller to read, there’s no doubt that you have a handful of authors you will always turn to. Goodreads users have spoken, and there is one in particular who stands out the most: The Queen of Psychological Suspense, Freida McFadden.

McFadden, also known as the Queen of Twists, takes up five of the 12 spots on the list of “most read mysteries and thrillers” of 2026. Her latest novel, The Divorce, isn’t on the list despite being one of the most popular books of the year, as this list is focused on reading challenges in June 2026.

In the top spot is Dear Debbie, which follows a woman who starts to act on her thoughts of revenge when her life starts spiraling out of control. What happens when an advice columnist starts to dish out unhinged advice?

Then, in spots three, four, and five are The Housemaid books. The first of the books is in third place, which isn’t surprising with the 2025 Sydney Sweeney movie popular on streaming platforms. The Housemaid’s Secret is the second people are reading, with that book being adapted into a movie and slated for theatrical release on Dec. 17, 2027. The Housemaid Is Watching completes the trilogy, and it’s not surprising to see it just behind the other two books.

Then, at No. 6, is The Intruder, the 2025 release that follows Casey, a woman who lives in the wilderness in a cabin not built for a hurricane. When she sees a young girl outside covered in blood, mysteries develop, and Casey realizes that she may not live to see the morning. Just how far are people willing to go to protect themselves?

McFadden, who recently revealed her real name, has another novel coming out in 2026. The Witch is slated for publication on Oct. 6, 2026.

As of right now, she has seven books optioned and in various stages of development. As The Housemaid’s Secret is getting closer to release, her novels Dear Debbie and The Divorce were optioned before they were even released. The Tenant, The Surrogate Mother, The Teacher, and Never Lie have also been picked up. This doesn’t mean they will all end up being developed, as some were optioned a few years ago with no movement on them just yet.

When talking about her success with The Gloss, McFadden noted, “It’s still shocking to me. I genuinely started doing this for fun. I didn’t expect it to go anywhere and then it became a fun challenge – let me see if I can get more readers – and then it just exploded. I can’t talk about my success without acknowledging that part of it is luck, everything falling into place at the right time.”
