The Weld County commissioners on Monday decided to keep the Weld County Justice Center in downtown Greeley.
On Monday morning, the commissioners decided unanimously to keep the judicial center in downtown Greeley, as its price analysis revealed it to be the most cost-effective option. The final cost for the project has come out to $490 million, $8 million less than it would have been to relocate the center to O Street, as the county had considered doing.
The county has confirmed the judicial center’s expansion can be accomplished without incurring debt.
“What’s very pleasing about this particular plan is that we have worked through things with our CFO, and we can do so in the Weld County way,” Commissioner Scott James said. “We’re going to be able to get there with what we’ve got, which is a pretty darn exciting thing for me.”
The commissioners directed staff to finalize the necessary agreements and documents to enable the construction of a judicial center on what is known as the West Block, on the same block as the First United Methodist Church, 917 10th Ave., just west of the existing court operations.
Additionally, as part of this project, the county will construct a new administration building that will include offices for the district attorney where the current Centennial building is situated.
With this decision, the county will continue to explore funding options using the dollars the county has set aside for future capital and infrastructure projects.
