A former music educator in Greeley recently became the 50th band director to receive the Colorado Bandmasters Association’s Hall of Fame Award.

The 487-member Colorado Bandmasters Association inducted Kirk Vogel, a retired Heath Middle School music educator, into the association’s Hall of Fame at an annual convention membership meeting July 17 in Denver, according to Ed Cannava, executive secretary of the association.

Every year since 1976, the Hall of Fame Award has gone to one of Colorado’s many outstanding band directors, Cannava said.

For 34 years, Vogel has served as an educator, clinician and composer in Colorado.

In 2013, he said goodbye to his successful teaching career when he retired from Heath Middle School, formerly known as Heath Junior High, where he spent most of his career, Cannava said. Before teaching at Heath, he also worked at schools in Palisade and Bayfield, Colorado.

Vogel continues to remain an active “composer, guest conductor, adjudicator, educator/clinician,” according to Cannava.

“On behalf of the Colorado Bandmasters Association, I would like to congratulate your entire Heath community for receiving such a great honor bestowed upon your wonderful past band director, Kirk Vogel,” Cannava said.
