Ace Austin looks for her sophomore breakout

As the Alabama women’s basketball team prepares for the 2026-27 season, sophomore guard Ace Austin is poised to be one of the key pieces for a new-look Crimson Tide that includes a new head coach and only four returning players.

Coming out of Spring Garden, Alabama, as a 5-star recruit and a two-time Alabama Miss Basketball winner, Austin was the Crimson Tide’s sixth woman during her freshman season.

She averaged 7.0 points, 2.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game, playing around 20 minutes per game. Austin hit a career-high of 21 points against Samford on Nov. 19, 2025, and she shot 37.8% from the 3-point line for the season. The team finished 24-11 and lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament as a sixth seed to Louisville.

The Crimson Tide went through an offseason of change, as Kristy Curry departed after 13 seasons as the team’s head coach in favor of the head coaching job at South Florida. Alabama is now led by first-time head coach Pauline Love, who was previously an assistant with the team during the 2024-–25 season.

Austin had high praise for Coach Love during SEC Media Day.

“I knew her coming back was a good fit, and I knew that there was already a connection,” Austin said.

As one of the four returning players on the roster, Austin will be the primary offensive engine for a new-look Alabama team that was projected to finish tenth in the 2026-27 SEC preseason poll, and she has shined in both of Alabama’s exhibition games during the preseason.

Austin scored 21 points in both games against UAH and Mississippi Christian while also chipping in six assists in the former and nine assists in the latter. Love has expressed faith in the sophomore guard.

“I explained to her this is going to be the best basketball she’s ever played,” Love said during SEC Media Day.
