World Aquatics World Cup #3 – Astana
October 15-17, 2026 Astana, Kazakhstan SCM (25 meters) How to Watch Meet Central Entries Live ResultsMarrit Steenbergen opened up a massive lead in the overall World Cup standings on the opening day of the final leg of the series in Astana, while the battle for the men’s title is up for grabs after a big day from South African Pieter Coetze.
WOMEN’S SERIES
Steenbergen came into Astana with 116.7 points, leading the series by 5.7 points over China’s Yu Yiting (111.0), having scored 58.2 points in Baku and 58.5 in Tashkent after sweeping the women’s 100 free, 50 back, 100 back and 100 IM at both stops.
On Day 1 in Astana, Steenbergen scored a massive 39.1 points after picking up dominant wins in the 200 free and 50 back, completing the Triple Crown in the latter.
As for the 200 free, Steenbergen added that event to her lineup for the first time in Astana, with World Aquatics changing the event schedule from Baku and Tashkent.
Yu won the 400 IM in a new Chinese Record on Day 1, scoring 19.1 points, while Roos Vanotterdijk, who came in ranked 3rd in the series, won the 50 fly for 19.0 points to maintain her place in the standings.
However, despite Steenbergen now sitting more than 25 points up on Yu, only a swimmer’s best three events count towards their final tally, so that gap is a bit misleading (see a full refresher on the scoring format at the bottom of the article).

MEN’S SERIES
The battle for the top spot on the men’s side is much closer than the women’s, though Egor Kornev came into Astana in the box seat as the series leader with 116.7 points, leading Coetze (114.3) and Luke Barr (113.0).
On Day 1, Coetze delivered a big win in the men’s 100 back, completing the Triple Crown in a time of 48.40 to score 19.8 points and bring his tally up to 134.1 for the series.
As for Kornev, he was the runner-up to Cameron McEvoy in the 100 free, being denied the Triple Crown after breaking the world record in Baku and then tying for the victory with McEvoy in Tashkent. That swim earned Kornev 17.7 points, moving him to 134.4, just 0.3 clear of Coetze.
However, although he’s battling injury, two of Kornev’s best events are still to come with the 50 fly and 50 back, though both fall on Day 3. He’s won the 50 fly at each of the first two stops, breaking the world record last week in Tashkent, and in the 50 back, he won in Baku before placing 2nd to Coetze last week. That event could very well end up deciding the series.
Kornev will also race the 50 free on Day 2, though McEvoy will be tough to beat after winning each of the first two stops over the Russian.
For Coetze, he only has three entries (compared to Kornev’s four), so he can’t afford a misstep in either the 50 or 200 back the rest of the way if he wants to win the series.
Barr has won the 200 breast and 100 IM at each of the first two stops, and also claimed the 200 IM in Baku. He was 5th in the 200 IM last week, and then in his lone event on Day 1 in Astana, finished 3rd in the 200 IM to score 15.0 points.
He still has the 100 breast, 200 breast and 100 IM to race over the next two days, though it will be a tall order to run down Kornev and Coetze for the top spot in the standings.
The biggest movers were So Ogata and Alberto Razzetti, who both scored over 30 points thanks to racing in two events on Day 1.
Ogata won the 200 fly over Chen Juner, busting his Triple Crown, while Razzetti placed 4th in the event. At the end of the session, Razzetti was the runner-up in the 200 IM, while Ogata placed 5th.
Given the swimmers surrounding them in the standings only have one score in the board, it will be interesting to see if Ogata and Razzetti can maintain their spots once the dust settles.
