United Kingdom Prime Minister Andy Burnham announced new steps his government will take to address brain cancer in the country. The announcement comes after the country’s new leader met with Archie Goodburn, a Scottish swimmer and advocate for brain cancer patients – a disease that Goodburn himself lives with.
Burnham announced to Parliament during Prime Minister’s Questions that he would meet with the breaststroker later in the day. BBC Breakfast, the program where Goodburn initially made his teary-eyed plea to Burnham for more investment, captured part of the encounter and an interview:

Goodburn said that Burnham and Health Secretary of State Yvette Cooper addressed all of his policy requests “to some extent.” The Labour Party-ran government committed to establishing a national lead on brain cancer, one of Goodburn’s key asks. The lead, to be appointed by Cooper, will conduct a review on what obstacles brain cancer patients face and follow up with an action plan, the government says.
Goodburn also asked that the government adjust the regulatory landscape to make preclinical trials in Britain more feasible. He himself had difficulty accessing the Vorasidenib brain cancer drug when he was first diagnosed with cancer in 2024 because of the length of government approval process. Burnham responded by asking the Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency to shorten its review times for medicines that treat rare conditions from three years to two.
“They’ve listened to thousands of voices around the country,” Goodburn said gratefully about the government, also mentioning he was offered a follow-up meeting. Reciprocally, Burnham and Cooper thanked the swimmer for his advocacy.
Goodburn has had a strong year in the pool while battling cancer and juggling advocacy. He placed 7th in the 50 breast in his first Commonwealth Games final last month. Prior to that, he hit several best times and even broke the Scottish national record in the 50 breast at the BUCS Championships in February. He has consistently used his platform as an athlete to advocate for brain cancer patients like himself.
