World Aquatics World Cup #3 – Astana

October 15-17, 2026 Astana, Kazakhstan SCM (25 meters) Meet Central Results Entries How to Watch

The first day of the final stop of this year’s World Cup kicked off with prelims in Astana, Kazakhstan, today, with a slightly different event schedule to the two previous stops. What did remain the same, however, were the names headlining the session.

Marrit Steenbergen topped the 50 back in 26.12, nearly four tenths of a second ahead of the 26.48 she clocked in prelims last week. She went on to win gold in 25.70, a little faster than the 25.75 she posted at the first stop.

Maria Osetrova (26.52) and Tessa Giele (26.82) will flank her tonight, but one women who will not be challenging her is Belgian record holder Roos Vanotterdijk, who has placed 2nd at both stops so far.

Instead, she will be focusing on the triple crown in the 50 fly, and led the field with a 25.24 in that event. Daria Klepikova was a tenth of a second back in 25.35.

Cam McEvoy and Egor Kornev will resume their battle in the 100 free after tying for victory in 45.24 last week, but neither one took top spot this morning. That honor went to Dutchman Sean Niewold, who clocked 46.83 to edge out McEvoy’s 46.89. Kornev was a quarter-second back in 47.15, and has the chance to claim the triple crown tonight having also won the event at the first stop in a world record of 44.84.

Michael Houlie topped the men’s 50 breast in 26.04, but the final will be loaded tonight with Caspar Corbeau (26.32), Ludovico Viberti (26.33), Kirill Prigoda (26.33), Qin Haiyang (26.36), and Koen de Groot (26.50) also in the mix. No triple crown is on the line, with Qin and Houlie having split the wins so far.

Mona McSharry has her eyes on the triple crown in the 100 breast, having cleared the prelims field by half a second this morning in 1:04.39. Evgeniia Chikunova (1:04.91) was the only swimmer within a second of the Irishwoman.

The morning session wrapped up with the first two triple crowns of the series. Lucas Henveaux won the men’s 1500 free in 14:33.14, seven seconds ahead of Hungarian 16-year-old Oliver Papai‘s 14:40.55, while Singapore’s Ching Hwee Gan hacked seven seconds off her national record in the women’s 1500 free to touch in 15:38.41, ten seconds ahead of New Zealand’s Caitlin Deans.

    Other Event Highlights:

Pieter Coetze set himself up for another tilt at the 100 back world record after his 48.21 African record last week, placing 2nd in the heats this morning in 50.27. Russian teammates Pavel Samusenko (50.14) and Kliment Kolesnikov (50.35) sandwich him, with Canadian record holder Blake Tierney (50.69) also in the mix. Luke Barr topped the men’s 200 IM in 1:55.27 in what is proving a fantastic World Cup tour for the Texas Ford Aquatics’ swimmer. He won the event in Baku at the first stop in 1:51.34 but was only 5th last week. Shaine Casas (1:56.48) and Finlay Knox (1:56.62) return from last week’s podium with Ilia Borodin (1:55.96) also in the mix, but there is no Carson Foster as he DNS’ed, opting for the 200 fly instead this morning. Steenbergen will have a double this evening as she moved through to the 200 free final as the second fastest qualifier with a 1:56.27, with Anna Peplowski (1:55.07) ahead of her and triple crown threat Siobhan Haughey (1:56.74) behind her. Chen Juner (1:53.59) and So Ogota (1:53.92) will resume their 200 fly battle, having placed 1-2 at both stops so far. Juner has won both in sub-1:50 swims, but Ogota narrowed the margin from two seconds to just three tenths of a second last week. Carson Foster (1:54.35), Andrei Minakov (1:54.63), Commonwealth chapion Lewis Clareburt (1:55.21) and former world short course champion Alberto Razzetti (1:56.08) bring even more international class to this field.
