That CAA Football would have multiple teams qualify for the FCS playoffs has long been a given, but this season, its streak is in jeopardy. Here’s who is the most in contention for the conference title and the postseason, and who basically isn’t in the 13-team CAA.
CAA Football is seeking to continue an incredible run of FCS football playoff seasons, but a conference that’s tied as the largest in the Division I subdivision faces something unheard of for a long time.
The 13-team CAA may wind up sending only its champion to the playoffs.
The CAA has had multiple teams in the playoffs for 35 straight years. In fact, it’s had at least three qualifiers in 18 of the past 20 years, and it was the first conference to have six qualifiers in a postseason (2018).
The loss of former powers since 2022 has been devastating to the CAA: James Madison and Delaware moved up to the FBS, and Richmond, Villanova and William & Mary joined the Patriot League. Villanova was a national semifinalist last year; UAlbany (2023) is the most recent among current members.
With seven weeks remaining in the FCS regular season, there’s plenty of time for CAA teams to finish strong, and to have one or more secure an at-large playoff bid to combine with the conference champion, which earns an automatic qualifying bid.
CAA teams play an eight-game conference schedule. Campbell is the lone ranked team (17) in the Stats Perform FCS Top 25 Poll, but Monmouth, Stony Brook, Elon and Bryant are receiving votes.

Monmouth (4-2, 3-0)
TRACR Rankings – CAA/National: 3/29 Remaining Opponents: at New Hampshire, at Hampton, Bryant, North Carolina A&T, Merrimack, at Campbell Remaining Opponents’ Combined Record (Win%): 15-20 (.429) Outlook: That the first-place team beats UNH after losses in four straight seasons would go a long way toward winning the CAA title for a first time. The Hawks’ regular-season finale at Campbell figures to be one of the more-important conference games remaining.Campbell (5-1, 2-0)
TRACR Rankings – CAA/National: 2/27 Remaining Opponents: Towson, at Maine, at UAlbany, Stony Brook, at Elon, Monmouth Remaining Opponents’ Combined Record (Win%): 15-20 (.429) Outlook: The surprising Fighting Camels – a mere 2-10 last year – are seeking the first playoff bid in program history. The loss is to Florida, so they’re unbeaten against FCS competition.FCS teams that have surpassed last year's win total:Campbell: 2-10 to 5-1Norfolk State: 1-11 to 3-3North Alabama: 2-10 to 4-2UAlbany: 2-10 to 3-3Bryant: 3-9 to 4-1Houston Christian: 2-10 to 3-3

TRACR Rankings – CAA/National: 5/50 Remaining Opponents: at Brown, at Maine, Stony Brook, at Monmouth, UAlbany, at Sacred Heart, Rhode Island Remaining Opponents’ Combined Record (Win%): 17-20 (.459) Outlook: Just like Campbell, Bryant has never appeared in the FCS playoffs and only has an FBS loss (Army). They join Stony Brook as the only CAA teams without a bye remaining on their schedule.Stony Brook (3-2, 1-0)
TRACR Rankings – CAA/National: 1/20 Remaining Opponents: at Towson, UAlbany, at Bryant, Sacred Heart, at Campbell, at New Hampshire, Hampton Remaining Opponents’ Combined Record (Win%): 17-23 (.425) Outlook: The Seawolves ended Rhode Island’s 11-game CAA winning streak last month. They’re the CAA’s top-scoring squad, which fuels the conference’s top TRACR rating (+11.9).UAlbany (3-3, 1-1)
TRACR Rankings – CAA/National: 4/31 Remaining Opponents: at Stony Brook, at Rhode Island, Campbell, at Bryant, Maine, at North Carolina A&T Remaining Opponents’ Combined Record (Win%): 17-17 (.500) Outlook: The Great Danes’ immediate stretch of CAA games is formidable: Their next four opponents are a combined 15-7, while the final two are just 2-10.Elon (4-2, 2-2)
TRACR Rankings – CAA/National: 6/52 Remaining Opponents: Wofford, at Stanford, at North Carolina A&T, Hampton, Campbell, at Towson Remaining Opponents’ Combined Record (Win%): 12-23 (.343) Outlook: With two conference losses already and an FBS game remaining, the Phoenix probably can’t afford to lose to another FCS opponent to have playoff hopes.Rest of the Conference
First-year CAA member Sacred Heart (2-3, 2-2; TRACR Rankings: 7/54) is playing 11 overall games – one below the FCS maximum. The combined winning percentage of their six remaining opponents, including two nonconference, is the lowest for all CAA teams (.333). Even a sweep may not be enough for an at-large playoff bid when considering a 9-3 Monmouth squad was left out of last year’s 24-team field.
Defending CAA champion Rhode Island (3-3, 1-2; TRACR Rankings: 8/68) handed North Carolina A&T its only win, so it likely has to win its six remaining games to be in playoff contention. They include road dates at two-time defending Ivy League co-champ Yale, New Hampshire and Bryant.
Teams that realistically should focus most on improvement in the second half of the season are Maine (1-5, 1-2; TRACR Rankings: 10/84), New Hampshire (2-4, 1-2; TRACR Rankings: 11/94), North Carolina A&T (1-5, 1-2; TRACR Rankings: 12/97), Hampton (1-5, 0-2; TRACR Rankings: 13/117) and Towson (0-6, 0-2; TRACR Rankings: 9/73).
