WARNING! The following contains spoilers for the Season 12 premiere of Chicago Med, “Shots Fired,” on NBC.
It’s a different world in the ED when Chicago Med returns for its 12th season as the woman who kept things running, Sharon Goodwin (S. Epatha Merkerson), is out on leave as she waits for the results of an investigation that is looking into who released Dr. Theo Rabari’s (Manish Dayal) medical records and broke HIPAA.
Board member Miranda Lewis (Orlagh Cassidy) says she has proof that Sharon is responsible, but Sharon isn’t saying anything. The release of the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder (sociopathy) caused Theo to resign, resulting in Daniel Charles (Oliver Platt) being able to retain his job, and since Sharon and Daniel are best friends, it doesn’t look good for Sharon, who was told she had until the end of the day to turn in her resignation. It was also Miranda who was trying to oust Dr. Charles.
In a surprise twist at the end of the season premiere, Nurse Doris (Lorena Diaz) showed up at Sharon’s door and revealed that she was the one who released the info.

“Doris coming to her door at the end of the episode and confessing tells you that Goodwin has not known for sure what happened the last three months,” showrunner Allen MacDonald tells Parade in this exclusive interview. “And it’s a little more complicated. I can tell you it’s a little more complicated moving forward, how much Goodwin knew and how much she didn’t know.”
Truth be told, Sharon was so unclear about what actually happened that she hasn’t spoken to Daniel in the three months since her suspension, which has him bewildered.
“Goodwin didn’t want to engage with Dr. Charles about it until she had a real solid view of what actually had happened, because she knows that whoever leaked Dr. Rabari’s [medical records] was doing it to help Dr. Charles. And she doesn’t really want to get into it with him until then.”
And the reason, according to MacDonald is a funny one: The problem is Dr. Charles loves to talk.
“That is his superpower,” he says. “And so, if his best friend is shutting him out and not talking, that’s like a form of torture for him. But she’s doing it for his own good.”
Why Miranda is gunning for Sharon is a mystery that will be revealed later in the season.
“There are political reasons why she’s doing it and there’s personal reasons why she’s doing it,” MacDonald points out. ‘Goodwin saved her life. And this is one that doesn’t like to owe anybody a favor. I’m just telling you that I think someone like Miranda, in a way, she should be grateful, but it makes her angry that she owes Goodwin her life.”
Sharon’s absence isn’t the only one being felt in the ED. Dr. Dean Archer (Steven Weber) is temporarily back to running the ED while Caitlin Lenox (Sarah Ramos) is in Switzerland undergoing a trial for prion disease, a rare, fatal, genetic degenerative brain disorder.
“She’s finally taken that step into not being in denial about her diagnosis and doing something about it,” MacDonald says.
And the reason is due to Mitch Ripley (Luke Mitchell) having told her he would rather spend a short amount of time with her than a lifetime with someone else if she were to come down with prion symptoms. It was his persistent declaration of love that finally wore down the woman who tends to push people away.
“[He got through to her] with a lot of patience and not putting up with the bullshit, not being afraid of her,” MacDonald says. ‘I think that part of her deal is that she pushes people hard to keep them at bay, and he just didn’t fall for that. And once she felt safe with him, she opened up to him. I think that that was the thing that made the difference.”
Another love story that may be unwinding is that of Archer and Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram). We know that Archer has feelings for her, but he’s been pretty stoic since declaring his feelings, especially since they had baby Mabel together and are co-parenting in Hannah’s apartment.
“It can definitely turn into something more,” MacDonald teases. “I think that there are definitely feelings between the two of them. But exactly what they are, I think neither of them is quite able to define and not quite ready to define, and they’re probably using Mabel as a reason to not talk about it yet. So, that will be something that they are negotiating and struggling with as the season goes on, because in the finale, she didn’t say I love you back. There’s a reason for that. And so, we’ll see if she gets there.”
As for what else is coming, Macdonald drops this hint: “We have some big stuff coming up for our fall finale and our winter premiere, as far as medical cases. I don’t want to go into detail, but I’m very excited about the stuff that we do have. There are some unexpected stories coming up, for sure.”
Chicago Med airs Wednesday nights at 8 p.m. ET/PT on NBC. Streams next day on Peacock.
