In 1967, one rock song got a second life with the band Jefferson Airplane and became a true hit, still praised over half a century after it was first released.
The song “Somebody to Love,” now known as a Jefferson Airplane classic, was originally written by Darby Slick after a failed relationship. His band, the Great Society, recorded and released the song as a single in early 1966.
Unfortunately, the track didn’t get much attention when it came out. But Slick’s sister-in-law, Grace Slick, who was a vocalist and guitarist for the Great Society at the time, saw the track’s major potential.
While Grace played a key role in the Great Society, she ended up leaving the band later in 1966 to join Jefferson Airplane, which she felt was run more professionally than her former band. Grace took the place of the band’s original singer, Signe Toly Anderson, who left to focus on her family.
When she joined Jefferson Airplane, Grace brought the song “Somebody to Love” with her, and the band got right to work on music for their second studio album, Surrealistic Pillow. Alongside a bunch of new tracks Jefferson Airplane worked on, the group recorded their own version of “Somebody to Love” as well and released it on the new album. In February 1967, they also released it as Surrealistic Pillow‘s second official single.
Jefferson Airplane’s more hard-rock take on the song “Somebody to Love” was an undeniable success. Despite coming out almost exactly a year after the first version, the band’s single soared to the top of music charts. It was a No. 1 hit in Canada, while it peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100.

While “Somebody to Love” would remain Jefferson Airplane’s highest-charting song ever in the U.S., the band still went on to have a great career with more hits. This includes their next single, “White Rabbit,” which was written by Grace before she joined the band.
Now decades after “Somebody to Love” came out, it’s clear that Jefferson Airplane’s version is still much loved by music fans and critics. The song continues to receive a lot of praise, and it was even included on Rolling Stone‘s list of the “500 Greatest Songs of All Time” alongside many other classic rock hits.
