2026 Candidate Introductions: Chatham County Board of Commissioners

During this local election season, 97.9 The Hill and Chapelboro spoke with candidates for races representing Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough and Pittsboro — a series of conversations comprising our Candidate Introductions.

Each answered the same set of questions regarding their decision to run for elected office, their thoughts on pressing community issues and what they wish for residents to think of when voting this fall. Their answers (edited down to five or six minutes for clarity and brevity) are shared here, as well as links to their respective campaign websites or pages.

If a candidate did not respond or chose not to speak with 97.9 The Hill and Chapelboro, it will be designated with no audio. The order of candidates below is in the alphabetical order of their last names. The order candidates appear on the ballot in the 2026 election has been determined randomly, by the State Board of Elections. For more information on that process, click here.

Three Chatham County Board of Commissioner seats are on the ballot this fall. The first, District 3 – which covers west Pittsboro, Briar Chapel and other parts of northeastern Chatham – is effectively decided, with former sheriff Mike Roberson running unopposed after he won the Democratic primary in March. Incumbent Franklin Gomez-Flores also won his Democratic primary and now faces Republican and retired IT professional and U.S. Navy serviceman Steve Ganley in District 5, which encompasses all of southwestern Chatham County as well as East Siler City and Goldston. In District 4, covering northwestern Chatham and West Siler City, incumbent and Democrat Katie Kenlan also faces an opponent in Republican and local businessman John Michael Crowell.

97.9 The Hill spoke with the candidates, asking these questions that are reflected in the recorded responses:

At this moment, what is inspiring you to run for office? What are the top three issues your campaign is built on? During this general election cycle, what have you heard most consistently from voters and how might that shape what you try to accomplish on the Board of County Commissioners? In the last few years, what do you believe the board has done well to help address affordability concerns of Chatham County residents? Where do you believe there’s still work to be done? When voters see your name on the ballot, what do you want them to think of? Chatham County Board of Commissioners
