Seth Johnson Undergoes Knee Surgery

Athletics right-hander Seth Johnson has undergone left knee surgery, reports Martín Gallegos of MLB.com. The righty is expected to be recovered in time to be healthy for next year’s spring training.

Johnson, 28, was just acquired a few months ago. At the trade deadline in early August, the A’s sent outfielder Colby Thomas to the Phillies to acquire Johnson in a one-for-one swap. Johnson has intrigued a few teams with his arsenal but hasn’t been able to post strong results just yet. He averages almost 98 miles per hour on his four-seamer and also throws a splitter, sinker, slider and curveball.

Thanks to his live arm, Johnson has inspired a few clubs to take a shot on him. He was drafted by the Rays in 2019. He was traded to the Orioles in 2022 as part of the three-team, five-player trade that was headlined by Trey Mancini going to the Astros. The O’s traded him to the Phillies at the 2024 deadline as part of the deal that sent Gregory Soto to Baltimore.

Around all the transactions, Johnson has logged 48 2/3 innings in the big leagues, allowing 6.84 earned runs per nine. His 11.7% walk rate is a few ticks higher than par but he also has a strong 24.7% strikeout rate. His minor league work is more intriguing. Once a starter, he has been in a relief role for the past two years. Since the start of 2025, he has thrown 95 Triple-A innings with a 3.79 ERA. His 11.8% walk rate in that sample is still high but he has punched out 27.5% of batters faced.

Johnson was added to Baltimore’s 40-man roster in November of 2022, to keep him out of the Rule 5 draft. He used his three option years in 2023, 2024 and 2025. The Phillies were granted a fourth option for 2026 but Johnson will be out of options going forward.

That will make it harder for him to continue holding a roster spot but the A’s have a fairly wide open bullpen. With Mark Leiter Jr. becoming a free agent, they are short on established veterans in next year’s projected relief group. Hogan Harris, Scott Blewett, Justin Sterner, Brady Basso and Chris Roycroft are all 30 years old or close to it but Harris is the only one to have thrown at least 115 big league innings. The A’s could add to that group in the offseason but struggle to sign free agents while they are playing in a hitter-friendly minor league park.

There’s room for Johnson to carve out a role there but it also wouldn’t be a shock to see him squeezed off the roster at some point. Despite the attractive profile, he hasn’t yet found major league success yet and has no roster flexibility to offer anymore. On top of that, he’s now recovering from knee surgery. Though he is expected to be ready for next year’s spring training, it further contributes to his current flimsy standing.
