Steven R. McQueen is back in the spotlight, and fans of The Vampire Diaries are making sure he knows they’re happy to see him.
McQueen, 38, who played Jeremy Gilbert on the hit CW supernatural drama, made a rare public appearance at the Forever Mystic Falls Fan Meet 7 in Paris on Oct. 3 and 4. The convention brought together several stars from the Vampire Diaries universe, including Ian Somerhalder, Paul Wesley, Kat Graham and Riley Voelkel.
For longtime viewers, McQueen’s appearance was notable because he has largely stayed out of the public eye in recent years. His last known social media post dates back to 2021, and he had not been regularly appearing at Vampire Diaries fan conventions.
Videos and photos from the Paris event quickly circulated online, prompting plenty of excitement from fans who were thrilled to see the actor back with his former Vampire Diaries community. But some of the online conversation focused on McQueen’s changed appearance, leading other fans to rally around him and ask people to stop commenting on his body.
One fan called out the harsh reaction on social media, writing that the actor deserved support for returning to the fans after spending years away from the spotlight.
“He lost his father and then struggled with depression,” they wrote over images of the actor, noting the five previous convention appearances he cancelled.
“This was his first convention in almost five years.”
The caption on the TikTok post was simple: “If you’re making fun of his appearance, you’re the problem. I’m proud of you for showing up, Steven. Bless you.”
Others similarly pointed out that McQueen is allowed to age and change, just like anyone else.
McQueen has kept much of his personal life private during his time away. His father, actor and race-car driver Chad McQueen, died in September 2024 at age 63. There has been speculation online about how the loss may have affected Steven, but he has not publicly attributed his time away or appearance to his father’s death, so those claims remain unconfirmed.
For now, fans seem most interested in one thing: welcoming Jeremy Gilbert back.
