VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. The Anacapa Island to Mainland Swim for Service took place on Saturday off the coast of Ventura County.
Participants included first responders and competitive swimmers.
They swam in a relay from the island to Silver strand .
Grace Nackers,16, did it on her own last year and joined the relay team this year.
They did the 12.2 mile ocean swim in 8 and half hours.
"We've done a lot of physical and mental training, which is psychologically and physically challenging, and ultimately it's really good for us," said Nackers.
The swim coincides with Mental Health Month.
The money raised from sponsors goes to first responders and their programs including Junior Lifeguards, Police Cadets and Fire Explorers.
