The band Mad Crush stopped by Live & Local this week, celebrating the release of their new album “The Many Moods of Mad Crush.”

“I think there’s a lot of hope (and) a little bit of sadness,” says drummer Chuck Garrison of the “moods” in the album’s title. “I think that’s just kind of the human condition all swirled up into one.”
With Triangle music mainstay John Elderkin (The Popes) and vocal powerhouse Joanna Sattin at the center, Mad Crush has been active for nearly a decade, earning acclaim both locally and nationally for their wry, intimately detailed lyrics and Elderkin and Sattin’s playful verbal jousts. In “Many Moods,” though, Mad Crush is taking steps in slightly new directions, with a fuller band sound – and fewer back-and-forth duets, instead letting Sattin’s character (and voice) carry most of the narrative lead.
“Originally we did a lot of duets, June-and-Johnny style,” Elderkin says. “This time, I wanted to try to write songs that gave each of (our) characters a little more independent voice.”

Elderkin and Sattin do adopt distinct (and mostly consistent) characters through the majority of their songs – “like when you read a novel and the author’s name is the main character, but it’s sort of an exaggerated version,” Elderkin says. “Joanna’s kind of wry, questioning my character’s intentions…
“Both in real life and in music,” he adds with a laugh.
“Sometimes when I hear a song for the first time that John writes, I’m a little offended, and that’s when he tells me these are just characters,” Sattin jokes. “But other times, when they’re, you know, lovely songs, when they’re beautiful – (that’s when) they’re ‘totally heartfelt’.”

Now that the album is out, Mad Crush is celebrating with a show at the Speakeasy in downtown Carrboro, Saturday, September 19, beginning at 8 p.m.
