Rounds of thunderstorms producing heavy rain will begin moving into the Chicago area Friday night, the NBC 5 Storm Team said, bringing the potential for flooding and cooler temperatures as fall begins.
Friday morning, however, started out quiet, NBC 5 Storm Team meteorologist Iisha Scott said. By late morning and into the early afternoon, a few isolated showers could develop.
Starting late Friday night and continuing into the overnight hours, storms producing heavy rain are expected across the area, Scott said. Some of the storms could be strong or severe, with the Storm Prediction Center placing counties south and southwest of the city under a “marginal” risk of severe weather, which ranks as level one of five.
“It is going to be soaking wet Saturday morning,” Scott said, with heavy rain continuing through the late-morning hours. The primary threats will be damaging winds, “torrential rainfall” and strong gusts leading to flooding, especially in LaSalle, Kankakee and Will counties in Illinois and into northwest Indiana.
Scattered showers with moderate rain at times will continue Saturday afternoon, with rumbles of thunder possible into the evening.
Saturday night into Sunday “we’ll do it all over again,” Scott said, with another cluster of storms rolling in through the early morning hours. “Certainly not the best weekend if you have outdoor plans.”
Sunday during the daytime hours will be cloudy, Scott said, though showers cannot be ruled out. Overall, weekend rainfall totals are expected to exceed 2 to 3 inches in some areas.
Temperatures Friday and Saturday will remain in the 70s but drop into the 60s Sunday and Monday. Conditions for the first day of fall Tuesday will be drier and cooler, with a high of 62 degrees.
