The Baseball Writers Association of America announced the finalists for all the major awards on Monday night. The award winners will be revealed next week, but the finalists are the players who finished top three in the voting in some order.
Guardians left-hander Parker Messick is listed alongside Cam Schlittler and Dylan Cease among the finalists for the AL Cy Young award. As MLBTR contributor Ethan Hullihen observes, that ensures that Cleveland will receive a bonus pick after the first round in the 2027 draft. Messick met the eligibility for the Prospect Promotion Incentive, which means a top three Cy Young finish within his first three seasons nets Cleveland a pick.
For those unfamiliar with the PPI intricacies, that only applies to rookie-eligible players who appeared on at least two of the preseason Top 100 prospect lists at Baseball America, ESPN and MLB Pipeline. Messick made his MLB debut last August and remained rookie-eligible going into 2026. He appeared on the ESPN and Baseball America lists. The Guardians carried him on their roster for the entire ’26 season, so he could’ve earned them the pick either by winning Rookie of the Year or with a top three Cy Young finish in any season between 2026-28.
A team can only receive one PPI pick per player. Messick is unsurprisingly also a finalist for AL Rookie of the Year, but that’s no longer relevant to Cleveland’s PPI situation. They would not receive a second bonus pick if Messick wins ROY, nor would they receive any additional picks for a top three Cy Young finish in 2027 or ’28.
Schlittler is the heavy favorite to win the Cy Young. Cease will probably be the runner-up, but that’s not to diminish Messick’s excellent first full season. The Florida State product turned in the AL’s third-lowest ERA (2.56) across 32 starts. He ranked fourth in the AL with 186 1/3 innings pitched and eighth with 193 strikeouts. Messick had a similarly stellar seven-start debut late last year; he owns a 2.59 ERA and 25.3% strikeout rate over his first 39 MLB starts. Messick had a little shakier showing in his first postseason action but remains one of the brightest young arms in the game.
Although the Guardians are no longer impacted by the Rookie of the Year race, it will still be relevant to the PPI system. The other AL Rookie of the Year finalists, Kevin McGonigle and Payton Tolle, are eligible to net their respective teams a PPI pick. McGonigle is viewed as a heavy favorite to win the award and earn the draft choice for the Tigers. All three NL Rookie of the Year finalists (Carson Benge, Sal Stewart, and JJ Wetherholt) met the prospect criteria and made their respective clubs’ Opening Day rosters. Whichever player wins that award will net their team a pick.
That’s the extent of the PPI implications for this year’s award voting. In addition to the Rookie of the Year win or top three Cy Young finish, a PPI-eligible player can net their team a pick by finishing top three in MVP voting within their first three full seasons.
However, that again only applies to top prospects whom teams carried on the roster for a full service year during their rookie seasons. None of Schlittler, Jacob Misiorowski, Pete Crow-Armstrong nor Junior Caminero — all of whom are Cy Young or MVP finalists within their first three seasons — meet those criteria. Schlittler would never have been PPI eligible because he wasn’t a top prospect. Misiorowski, Caminero and Crow-Armstrong were top prospects but didn’t accrue a full year of service time during their respective rookie seasons.
