For Highland Park neighbors, Terrance Building funding could mean fewer safety concerns and more housing

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The Terrence Building, an abandoned psychiatric hospital on Elmwood Avenue, may soon be demolished after years of debate.

At an October 20th meeting, Rochester City Council approved the use of $20 million from the New York State’s Empire State Development Corporation for the demolition.

The building has been a longtime eyesore and safety concern for neighbors in the Highland Park area.

“It’s very positive. I’m really looking forward to it. I’ve lived in this neighborhood almost 40 years, and, the building and its outlived its usefulness, and it really needs to go,” said Luke Lorenzo.

The funding will also go toward a mixed-use redevelopment plan that includes 500 housing units. Lorenzo said this could be a major benefit for the neighborhood.

“I think it’s a good use. I mean, I’m not sure how they’re going to fit 500 units in there, but I think it’s a positive because we need more housing, especially new housing, because especially with the real estate market so tight here, like, we just don’t have a new enough new built,” Lorenzo said.

News10NBC spoke with other neighbors in the area, most of whom largely supported the project.

But Donna LaMura said she hopes city leaders focus on making the area more livable.

“They should make it more neighborly and livable and, not just pack people into towers like they have on Saint Paul Street and in other locations all over the town,” LaMura said.

There is no word yet on when demolition or construction will begin. News10NBC reached out to Whitestone Development Partners, the developer, but has not received a response.
