Dance company Pro-Excel has launched legal action against Oldham RLFC and its ex-chairman Bill Quinn in the High Court over a cancelled performance at Boundary Park last year.
Pro-Excel is suing the Championship club and its former owner for breach of contract and for defamation, after an attempt to gain a Guinness World Record for the most number of dancers to perform with a singer, set to happen before an Oldham game in May 2025, was abruptly aborted.
In April last year the Roughyeds claimed the decision had been made “due to the lack of required information by Pro-Excel”, and directed ticket refunds back to the dance company.
Around 2,500 child dancers, aged nine to 18, had been organised to perform at the event alongside English DJ and producer Sigala.
A crowd of more than 10,000 was expected to attend the event at Boundary Park.
The Roughyeds play their home games at Boundary Park (Photo: Getty)In a video posted online, Quinn alleged that the cancellation was down to safety concerns and a lack of paperwork provided by Pro-Excel.
“It wasn’t enough for the insurance brokers to send to the underwriters… [and] wasn’t deemed as acceptable from an insurance point of view,” Quinn said.
“We are not going to hold an event where people are unsafe or we feel that they’re unsafe.”
The online video containing the allegations has since been taken down. At the time Pro-Excel denied the allegations and any suggestion of wrongdoing.
The i Paper understands the dance company, which has worked in the United States at NFL and NBA games, as well as in the UK at Formula One and Rugby World Cup events, initiated legal action in April this year.
It is believed Pro-Excel is seeking £200,000 in damages from Oldham and Quinn, who stepped down as chairman and owner of the club in April after claiming ill health.
Almost 5,000 tickets were sold for the event, with thousands of customers left out of pocket and still chasing to get their money back.
According to reports, children across the country were also left devastated by the collapse of the event.
“Pro-Excel Limited can confirm that High Court proceedings have been issued against Oldham Rugby League Football Club 1876 Limited and a second defendant,” Pro-Excel said in a statement last month.
“The proceedings relate to matters arising from the cancellation of Pro-Excel’s planned event at Boundary Park in May 2025 and associated statements subsequently made.
“As proceedings are now live, it would not be appropriate for us to comment further. We will allow the legal process to take its course.”
Quinn took over as chairman of Oldham in May 2023, but endured a turbulent period in charge until his exit five months ago.
Director of rugby and fellow co-owner Mike Ford quit in January and Quinn was handed a year-long ban from Boundary Park, due to allegations made against him by Oldham Athletic‘s board.

Oldham also faced a winding-up petition from HMRC over a historic debt, but the petition was dismissed by the High Court in February.
Oldham RFLC, Quinn and Quinn’s legal representatives have not responded to requests for comment. Pro-Excel declined to comment when contacted by The i Paper.
