Joe Jackson bought a five-bedroom Encino house known as Hayvenhurst for $140,000; the Jackson family still co-owns the compound, appraised at $4.15 million in 2010

The Jackson family has called plenty of places home over the years, but one California property holds a particularly special place in its history.

Known as Hayvenhurst, the five-bedroom Encino estate was purchased by Joe Jackson for just $140,000. Still decades later, the famous family still co-owns the compound, which was appraised at $4.15 million in 2010.

Located in the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, the main home consists of five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, as well as three small stores that resemble a candy store, a puppet shop and an ice cream parlor. Additions to the property in the 1980s include a six-foot Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs diorama, a movie theater and a koi pond. The street takes its name from an earlier West Hollywood estate constructed in 1907 by W. H. Hay, the sub-developer of Crescent Heights.

After living in several homes and hotels across Los Angeles while starting their career as the Jackson 5, the family eventually settled down in Hayvenhurst from their home in Gary, Indiana. Michael Jackson lived in the Encino property from 1971 until 1988 when he bought the Neverland Ranch. While living with his family, the singer recorded the songs for his solo albums: Off the Wall, Thriller and Bad. In addition, Jackson also developed his version of the Moonwalk.

“I like the house I live in, the whole theme of it I wanted to be mainly for kids, cuz when they come here I like to be inspired by their reaction.” Michael Jackson said in a 1983 interview with Steve Howell. “That’s why I like to go to Disneyland a lot. I go there to get my daily dose of the inspiration, really, and when I come back I’m ready, ready to take on everything. It’s really great, it’s just magic.”

Even after Michael Jackson moved out, the rest of the family continued to live there. Jermaine Jackson lived there on and off, while Joe Jackson left Hayvenhurst after the 1994 Northridge earthquake.

In 2010, the house was appraised at $4.15 million and underwent extensive renovations. The following year, Katherine Jackson, Joe’s wife and Michael’s mother, listed the compound for sale, but ideally wanted the estate to go to Michael’s children: Paris, Prince and Blanket. However, the estate has remained in the Jackson family, and as of 2019 was occupied by Paris.

Now, most of the Jackson family are sprawled all across Southern California and Las Vegas. Katherine and Prince Jackson reside in separate estates in Calabasas, while Paris Jackson also owns a home in Topanga Canyon. Meanwhile, Janet Jackson owns multiple properties across New York, Malibu, Bel Air and London. Prior to his passing in September 2024, Tito Jackson had a primary residence in Las Vegas, with previous homes in California and Oklahoma.

Michael Jackson passed away at just 50 years old due to acute propofol intoxication combined with benzodiazepine effects. Meanwhile, Joe Jackson, Michael’s father and manager of The Jackson 5, passed away in Las Vegas on June 27, 2018 after a years-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
