Golden Globe-Nominated Actor Breaks Silence on Replacing Fan-Favorite ‘Lord of the Rings’ Star For Upcoming Sequel: ‘There’s Pressure When You Try to Follow in Those Footsteps’

As audiences count down the days until the release of the long-awaited Lord of the Rings sequel, The Hunt for Gollum, star Jamie Dornan is discussing what it’s like taking over the role of Aragorn from the critically acclaimed actor, Viggo Mortensen.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the 44-year-old Dornan spoke about the “pressure” of assuming the role of Aragorn from Mortensen, who famously portrayed the role of the rugged heir to the throne of Gondor in the first three Lord of the Rings films.

“There’s pressure when you try to follow in those footsteps,” Dornan said earlier this month. “I’ve been asked to take on a super iconic role, and I’ll do my absolute best. But for me, Aragorn will always be Viggo, and only Viggo. His performance is one of my all-time favorites, and I feel honored to try and capture even a little bit of the energy he originally brought to the character.”

“There isn’t a single part of me that’s trying to do it better than he did,” Dornan went on to say.

For those wondering whether Dornan might excel in the role made famous by Mortensen, Dornan’s co-star in The Hunt for Gollum said he was amazed by the actor’s transformation for the film, saying, “I can honestly say that, for me, Aragorn is now Jamie Dornan.”

Joining Dornan in the cast is several prominent stars of the original Lord of the Rings trilogy, including Ian McKellen (Gandalf), Elijah Wood (Frodo Baggins), Lee Pace (Thranduil) and Andy Serkis (Gollum/Sméagol), the latter of whom is also serving as the movie’s director.

Joining the cast for the upcoming installment includes notable Hollywood talents Kate Winslet (Marigol) and Anya Taylor-Joy (Seren).

Written by Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, Phoebe Gittins, and Arty Papageorgiou, The Hunt for Gollum acts as a prequel to The Lord of the Rings, following Aragorn’s attempt to capture Gollum around the time of The Fellowship of the Ring.
