NEW YORK — Wednesday’s storm impacted much of Western New York and the Finger Lakes region. Many homes in Ontario, Wayne County, and the Shelby Center in Orleans County saw significant damage. We went to those areas to see for ourselves and to talk with witnesses.

Eight homes were hit hard by storm damage in a Wayne County neighborhood, leaving residents searching for their belongings scattered across yards.
News10NBC’s Erin Mahon followed up with families on Halesworth Lane in the Town of Ontario. As one family showed the items tossed into their yard, their neighbor pointed out a tarp that had flown across the road, saying it was theirs.
The damage varied from home to home. Some homes only had a shingle missing, while others had an entire row of trees uprooted.
Families left debris in their yards to ensure insurance claims were as accurate as possible. The Fry family showed their backyard where their shed was completely uprooted from its foundation and turned about 180 degrees.
“We were about to start eating, and he looked outside,” said Heather Fry.
“And I started to see a cloud, a funnel cloud. And then stuff started going up into the air. We saw everything moving on our porch and trees coming down in our neighbor’s yard,” Chris Fry said.
“We ran. We ran down into the basement,” Heather Fry added.
The Frys said their kids weren’t home when the storm hit, so they’re extremely grateful they’re okay. As for the home, material items can be replaced, they said.

Shelby Center in Orleans County sees worst storm damage as National Weather Service investigates possible tornado touchdown
News10NBC’s Adelisa Badzic was at the scene Wednesday night, but the damage on Thursday is much more visible in Shelby Center.
Trees and debris are scattered everywhere across the area. The road is closed with tree crews and what appears to be an electrical company working at the scene. The town of Shelby Highway and Water Department is also there.
A woman said there wasn’t any damage to the house, just lawn and tree damage.
When Adelisa was at the scene on Wednesday night, much of the roadway was still flooded. As of Thursday, there’s localized ponding in backyards, with some of the most severe flooding visible in the area.
The Office of Emergency Management said firefighters were busy pumping out basements. Many homes in the area saw flooded basements and required extensive cleanup.
One side of a large tree was snapped off completely. A town official said a firefighter in the county saw a tornado touch down in the general area.
The National Weather Service has plans to survey the damage. The first stop was in Niagara County, then Shelby Center, then down to Genesee County. The Office of Emergency Management said Shelby Center saw the worst of the storm.
