Lewis Hamilton endured a frustrating Friday at Zandvoort, with Ferrari’s SF-26 seemingly turning into a different machine when it mattered most.
While Charles Leclerc came within a whisker of pole, the seven-time world champion was left searching for answers after qualifying a distant seventh for Saturday’s Sprint.
The contrast was stark. Hamilton had emerged from the solitary practice session encouraged by the car’s behaviour, only for subtle set-up changes to apparently upset his car’s balance. By SQ3, the Ferrari he had beneath him bore little resemblance to the one he had driven earlier in the day.
"It was not a good session, unfortunately," Hamilton said as he conceded 0.624s to pole.
"This is the way it is. FP1 felt good. We made subtle adjustments to the car, but when we got into qualifying, it was a completely different car."
That left the Briton behind not only pole-winning George Russell, Lando Norris and Leclerc, but also Max Verstappen's Red Bull. With such a tight battle at the front – the top five separated by just a tenth – the Ferrari driver's deficit was all the more painful.
Hamilton was unable to explain precisely where things had gone awry, leaving Ferrari with a data hunt ahead of Saturday's Sprint.
"We need to figure out what went wrong, and then we'll do our best tomorrow. We've just got to go through the data and figure it out. Charles was in a slightly different place than me, so a bit closer to where I was."
Leclerc finds a Ferrari worth believing in
Hamilton's misery was all the more conspicuous because the other side of the Scuderia’s garage had plenty to celebrate.
Leclerc produced a near-perfect lap to qualify third, just 0.055s away from Russell's Mercedes, and described the effort as potentially his finest qualifying performance of the season.
"Well, I would have preferred to start first, but I'm very happy about today because honestly, I think it was one of the best, if not, I think it's my best qualifying lap this year," an upbeat Leclerc reported after ending the session just 0.055s to polesitter Russell.
For Ferrari, that was an important signal after the long summer break. Yet Leclerc knows the positive feeling must translate into race performance, particularly after a disrupted morning in damp conditions and with only one hour of practice available.
"That means that we are doing something right with the feeling [of the car],” he added.
“That doesn't mean it stays there forever, but at least it's always a good step in the right direction. And especially after such a long break, you kind of want that feeling to start the second half, so it was a good effort."
Dutch Grand Prix - Sprint qualifying resultsThe Monegasque remains cautious about the Sprint itself, however, with the abbreviated weekend schedule leaving teams with precious little dry running to establish their true long-run pace.
"In terms of race pace, it's a bit more difficult," Leclerc acknowledged.
"The conditions this morning were a little bit tricky, so we'll have to wait and see for tomorrow in the sprint race. But I believe that for now, it looks like a positive start to the weekend."
