Tyson Bagent has a lot on his plate going into Week 5.
Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson gave Bagent the keys to the ride heading into this week. There is no funny business with Case Keenum lurking. And a Caleb Williams surprise cameo has already been ruled out. That means Bagent gets a full share of snaps in practice. He’ll need it as he prepares to face a hostile environment and a secondary featuring two safeties considered among the league’s best. And while Bagent has every reason to be confident entering this week, the backup quarterback has nothing but respect for the Chicago Bears-Green Bay Packers rivalry.
This is what Bagent had to say when asked about motivating factors going into this game during his meeting with the media at Halas Hall on Wednesday:
“I think you go into each week the exact same, as far as Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, getting the plan down, being locked in, taking it extremely serious. But to say that this is just like any game, just wouldn’t be true. It’s one of the greatest rivalries in all of sports. Easy for the fans to get up for, easy for us to get up for. So it’ll certainly be a different feel out there, and that’s why it’s so important that we put in the amount of work that we need to this week, get acclimated in a smart way, but also in a hurry so we can have our best foot forward going into this weekend.”
NO SURPRISE HERE: Tyson Bagent to Start vs. Packers
Could he have gone in a different direction? Sure. But Bagent is all business going into Week 5. And I appreciate that so much.

All things considered, I thought Tyson Bagent played well in his Week 4 “start” against the New York Jets. He completed 25 of 34 passes, a 73.5 percent completion rate that eclipses the 70 percent mark Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson seems to want from quarterbacks in his system. And Bagent wasn’t on a dink-and-dunk plan. Bagent averaged 7.9 yards per attempt. For perspective, 7.9 yards per attempt would rank seventh in the league — ahead of Carolina’s Bryce Young (7.8) and just behind Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes (8.1). Yes, I realize it’s a one-game sample. So don’t come for me in the comments. I just wanted to put that number in context. Moving on…
For what it’s worth, the Bears’ head coach isn’t worried about the stage being too big for Bagent. Why would he? Game film (broken down here by colleague Patrick Flowers) says that Bagent did exactly what the team needed. That’s been Bagent’s M.O. in the five games he’s started as a pro. So why expect something different now?

It’s a rivalry game that is on another level. These two long-time rivals have been going at it for years, but this is the first time in a while in which Chicago appears to have the upper hand in the head-to-head matchup. In other words, Tyson Bagent will go into Lambeau Field with Bears fans expecting him to lead this team to victory.
I look forward to seeing if he is as up for the challenge as we are being made to believe.
