Startling map shows how Illinois tornado count compares to rest of U.S.

A map of reported tornadoes by the National Weather Service offers an unsettling look at the dramatic difference between the Chicago area and the rest of the U.S. for 2026.

If the United States were a dart board, it would seem as though Illinois is the bullseye for tornadoes, though some other hot spots would include states

Already, numbers have shown the Chicago area is having a record-breaking tornado year.

According to the National Weather Service, the latest count for all of Illinois sits at well above 200 confirmed tornadoes for 2026 so far. Of those, the Chicago area has seen nearly 70 alone, breaking a record set in 2024, when a then-record 63 twisters impacted the Chicago area.

The next highest state is Indiana, which sat below 100 confirmed tornadoes as of Monday afternoon.

This map from the Storm Prediction Center shows the comparison of how Illinois and the Chicago area compare to the rest of the country:

Even with severe weather season far from over in the Chicago area, the numbers across much of the Midwest could continue to grow as NWS surveyors continue to assess the damage and data from the recent barrage of storms.

Of the tornadoes hitting the Chicago area, many appear to be taking a similar path, striking the same suburbs over and over again.

Officials with the National Weather Service confirmed the latest string of tornadoes tore through Homewood, Lansing, Wilmington, Tinley Park, Mokena, Monee in Illinois and St. John in northwest Indiana.

Before that, Ransom, Streator, Hazel Crest, Glen Ellyn, Country Club Hills, Harvey and more.

That’s just within the last couple weeks — and some of them were hit more than once in that stretch.

NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeanes explained the reasoning behind that pattern, noting that there have been some unusual circumstances accompanying this summer’s storms.

While enhanced detection technology and changes to rating scales have played a small role in the rising numbers over the last several decades, the shift in stormy conditions and tornado-level winds is noticeable across Illinois.
