Things are getting spicy between Rhaenyra (Emma D'Arcy) and Mysaria (Sonoya Mizuno) once again in House of the Dragon season 3 – but this time, something feels very off between the pair.
Could the White Worm be setting her queen for up betrayal?
Rhaenyra and Mysaria have always had a complex relationship. Mysaria arrived at Dragonstone as a prisoner, gradually earning Rhaneyra's trust and eventually becoming her closest confidante. But, in season 2, fans were surprised to see the relationship between the queen-to-be and her Mistress of Whispers take a romantic turn, with a passionate kiss in the episode Smallfolk.
It was a big departure from George RR Martin's book, which depicts Mysaria as Daemon's (Matt Smith) mistress, and a moment that divided fans, with many wondering whether their romance was ever going to be addressed again. Now, more than a season later, their romance has progressed to the next level – but there seems to be more going on with Mysaria than meets the eye.
Throughout season 3, as she grapples with the weight of the crown, Rhaenyra has become increasingly isolated – from her husband, from her council, and now, from her subjects. And at the centre of it all is Mysaria.
Fans haven't had much reason to suspect Mysaria of betrayal until recently. Helping Rhaenyra's cause was a way for her to strike back at the Greens after their mistreatment of her, and Rhaenyra was always the clear choice as the monarch who would most look out for the smallfolk – Mysaria's biggest priority.
But, in recent scenes, Mysaria's loyalty hasn't exactly been steadfast. She's lied to Rhaenyra on multiple occasions, most concerningly about Helaena's (Phia Saban) pregnancy after Alicent (Olivia Cooke) asked her to keep the secret. And now, Rhaenyra's popularity with the smallfolk is plummeting, with the streets growing dangerous on her watch. It begs the question of what will happen if and when Mysaria feels that Rhaenyra is no longer the best option.
After all, the latest episode shows Mysaria at her most openly manipulative. Her fractious dynamic with Daemon isn't exactly new, with the pair constantly vying for Rhaenyra's attention and trust, but now we see her explicitly attempting to turn Rhaenyra against her husband, even when it's proven that he wasn't trying to betray her by lying about the identity of Sheepstealer's rider.
"Is there anything Daemon could do you would truly not believe?" she asks Rhaenyra in a shockingly impetuous moment.
Another worrying scene comes when Mysaria meets brothel madame Sylvi (Michelle Bonnard) in the throne room and asks her to keep her up to date with the smallfolk's worries. Mysaria says this under the guise that she will bring the issues to Rhaenyra when the queen is feeling "more accommodating" – but can we really believe her?
In placing herself in between Rhaenyra and the smallfolk, Mysaria has further isolated the queen, this time from her subjects. Anything she hears from her subjects, or that her subjects hear from her, will be filtered through Mysaria, leaving plenty of room for seeds of doubt to be sown.
Finally, and crucially, we come to the kiss. It feels wildly different from the pair's first romantic encounter, which saw the pair seeking comfort from each other in a very equal interaction.
Now, Rhaenyra feels conflicted about Daemon, let down by her council, and powerless when it comes to her subjects. She's insecure, fearful she's tarnishing her father's legacy, and rightfully worried about her position – and she has no one else to turn to.
Mysaria then tells Rhaenyra everything she wants to hear: that everyone opposing her will fall, that she will be queen for many years, that her children and children's children will uphold her legacy and, most importantly, she has never been more worthy of the crown.
Calling her by her first name and stroking her hair, Mysaria is very much in control of the interaction. She kisses Rhaenyra and pushes her down onto her back, dominating her. This time Rhaenyra is the one finding comfort in Mysaria, giving the Mistress of Whispers a certain control over her. That's without even mentioning the higher emotional stakes between the two now that their romantic relationship has reached a new level.
Rhaenyra is clearly not unaware of Mysaria's manipulations. In fact, she calls her out for attempting to turn her against Daemon and speaking honeyed words to her – but then, concerningly, she seems to disregard her misgivings.
None of this directly indicates that Mysaria is considering betraying Rhaenyra. But it does cast doubt over Mysaria's intentions, and clearly shows that Rhaenyra will be in a very dangerous spot if the White Worm ever does betray her now.
So what exactly could Mysaria's endgame be? Some fans have worried that she could be about to follow in Varys's (Conleth Hall) footsteps, after he switched sides and betrayed Daenerys (Emilia Clarke). At this point, it seems unlikely that Mysaria would favour the Greens over Rhaenyra – but we can't rule anything out when it comes to our Mistress of Whispers.
Perhaps more likely is the idea that Mysaria will always favour the smallfolk. We know that the show will likely end up covering the Storming of the Dragonpit, which sees the smallfolk riot and slaughter five dragons, causing catastrophe for House Targaryen. Could she eventually play a role in inciting these?
That would mark a big departure from the Martin's source material, but we know that showrunner Ryan Condal isn't afraid to change things up – and Mysaria's story has already proven very different.
For what it's worth, in Fire and Blood, Mysaria stays loyal to the Blacks until her death – and maybe that will still be the case in the series. After all, the White Worm has proven her loyalty many times before. But one thing is for certain as we head into the season 3 finale: Rhaenyra is in a very precarious position.
