Van der Valk returns to ITV1 tonight (Sunday 2 August) for its fourth outing – more than three years after it last aired on our shores. But despite the lengthy hiatus, little has changed for the team, who are as busy as ever in their bid to keep the streets of Amsterdam safe.
In the first episode, the team are called in to ensure a key witness makes it to court to testify against a criminal empire after another witness is killed while under police protection.
But "the situation is complicated by the fact that the protection officer in charge of the first victim is Kalie Tenkers, a former flame of Van der Valk's".
"Fair to say there is no love lost between the two, especially when he suggests she might have been involved in the killing," reads the official synopsis.
The remaining two cases involve "the killing of an environmental campaigner linked to a long-missing pop star, and the assassination of a cancer researcher whose breakthrough discovery may have made him a target".
"It feels like it’s bigger," lead Marc Warren said of season 4. "Suddenly we have explosions and these huge car chases. But married with that, you have the intimacy of this family unit that fans have grown to love. There’s a problem within the unit because one of them is ill. It’s very moving."

Marc Warren as Piet van der Valk
Who is Piet Van der Valk? A Commissaris in the Dutch police, who has earned the respect of his team. He loves Amsterdam, lives on a boat, and is described as "comfortable in his own skin, street smart, instinctive and unapologetic." Marc Warren says: "Van Der Valk is an everyman sort of character.
He reflects the energies of Amsterdam: its tolerance and liberalism. He can be a loner, and at times he might seem a little taciturn or moody but he has some stuff going on that we find out about as the show goes on."
What else has Marc Warren been in? The actor is perhaps best-known for playing Danny Blue in Hustle, Albert Blithe in Band of Brothers, or Nick Saverese in The Good Wife.
He has also starred as the dastardly Samuel Parker in Beecham House, and he was Pete Mayfield in the Netflix drama Safe. Other credits include Doctor Who (as Elton Pope), State of Play, The Vice, Flack, The Musketeers, Mad Dogs, and Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
Maimie McCoy plays Lucienne Hassell
Who is Lucienne Hassell? Inspector Hassell works alongside Van der Valk. She is his trusted confidante, and is described as "calm amid a storm, centred, down to earth".
What else has Maimie McCoy been in? The actress previously starred in The Musketeers as Milady de Winter, alongside her Van Der Valk co-star Marc Warren.
You may also have seen her as Nancy Raynott in White House Farm, as Dorothy in All Creatures Great and Small or as DC Tracy Joyce in A Confession – and she played Grace Harper in the BBC daytime drama London Kills. In 2016 she also had a role in DCI Banks, playing Tamsin Richards.
Emma Fielding plays Julia Dahlman
Who is Julia Dahlman? The Chief Commissaris, ie Van der Valk's boss. Four years before the start of the series she sustained injuries which continue to hamper her physically. Dahlman is "a velvet fist in an iron glove, a politician and sincere supporter of the team".
What else has Emma Fielding been in? Aside from being Oliver-nominated for her theatre work, Emma Fielding has appeared in a ton of TV shows. She has previously played Nicolette in Les Misérables, the voice of Kisar in Doctor Who episode Demons of the Punjab, and Amy Hollis in Unforgotten. Other credits include Close to the Enemy, Dark Angel, Years and Years, Cranford and Sanditon.
Darrell D'Silva plays Hendrik Davis
Who is Hendrik Davis? The pathologist. He's "foul-mouthed, hard living, hard-drinking but effective".
What else has Darrell D'Silva been in? The actor, who is a veteran of the Royal Shakespeare Company, has appeared on-screen in a number of TV shows – including Informer, Strike Back, Game of Thrones, Atlanta and Domina. He also has had roles in films such as Official Secrets, Wrath of Man and Marlowe.
Azan Ahmed plays Eddie Suleman
Who is Eddie Suleman? A new sergeant on the team. He joined in season 3. Eddie has been described as "intuitive, impulsive, and determined" by Ahmed.
What else has Azan Ahmed been in? Ahmed has made appearances in the series Doctors, Hope Street and Mood, and in the film What's Love Got to Do with It?.
Kim Riedle plays Kalie Tenkers
Who is Kim Riedle? A police sergeant and Van der Valk's ex-girlfriend.
What else has Kalie Tenkers? She has appeared in German soap Verbotene Liebe. More recently, she starred in Netflix German thriller Dear Child.
