One of the largest music festivals in the world is back at Grant Park in downtown Chicago, bringing thousands of music fans together.
Gates opened Thursday morning to the traditional mad-dash of spectators hoping to score front row access, with hundreds of thousands of fans expected to cross through the gates over the four-day festival.
Sky 5 was over Grant Park Thursday morning as some fans ran to the main stages to save a spot to see the headliners, including Lorde and Chicago’s own John Summit.
“I’m really excited to see Lorde, I got to see Lorde at Red Rock last year and she’s such an amazing performer so I’m really excited to see her again,” said Syd Shadrick, who hails from Chicago’s northwest suburbs.
Festivalgoers told NBC Chicago they’re spending a lot of money this weekend but said it’s worth every penny for what they consider an unforgettable experience.
“It’s such a magical experience that I love to go to every year,” said Gustavo Zuniga from Rockford. “I tell my friends I don’t care about my birthday, I don’t care about Christmas I don’t even care about Easter, as long as I get to do Lollapalooza, my year is set.”
Some even had to shell out extra bucks for their outfits, while others were able to put something together from what they already have.
“A lot of my outfits are from last year, but it’s fine honestly,” said Cole Baxter, who is visiting from St. Louis. “I thrift a lot of my clothes, so I’d say I’d spent a total on all of my outfits for the weekend, probably maybe $150.”
Ticket prices for one day general admission range from $185 to $2,100 for the platinum experience, but four-day passes were the way to go for many fans.
“We definitely had to plan financially for sure. I think the tickets for four days are like $400,” said Mari Frank, who traveled from Michigan for the concert.
“Between food and drinks, you end up rounding it up over a hundred for sure closer to maybe $250,” added Janeece Ader. “It’s definitely worth the experience.”
Music lovers said the memories are priceless.
“It brings us all together this,” said Landon Liboon from Hinsdale. “It’s the thing before we go back to college and stuff like that—this is the big event that we look forward to.”
