India National Cricket Team batter Tilak Varma may have a favourite batting position, but he has already proved that he can handle almost any role. Ahead of the second T20I against the West Indies in Ranchi on October 9, Tilak Varma revealed that he loves playing in the top order, especially at No. 3.
He has shown great flexibility for India by batting at almost every position from opener to No. 7. His ability to play different roles has made him the most versatile asset in the present set up. Earlier, Tilak Varma reveals how Rohit Sharma helped shape his leadership skills.
Tilak Varma initially made his mark as a dependable No. 3 and No. 4 batter. However, changes in the plans have forced the Hyderabad batter to take up lower-order roles at No. 5, No. 6 and No. 7. Now he admitted that moving from the top order to the lower middle order has not been easy for him.
However, the Indian batter has worked hard on his batting and mindset to adjust to the team’s needs. Now, Tilak is ready to take responsibility wherever the team wants him to bat.
Tilak Varma said on Star Sports: “I have always loved batting in the top order, especially at No. 3. I have been an opener since childhood, and I also played at No. 3 in the Under-19 World Cup. Later, I batted at No. 4 in the IPL and then moved to No. 5 and No. 6. I have played in different positions, but personally, I have always been an opener. If I get the chance to open, I will always be ready for it, but I really enjoy batting at No. 3.”
Tilak Varma reveals his favourite batting position
Tilak has been an opener since his early days and also played at No. 3 during the Under-19 World Cup. But he had to bat at No. 4 in the IPL, followed by roles at No. 5 and No. 6.
Well, the Indian batter said that No. 3 position remains his favourite. The biggest challenge for him has been moving from No. 3 or No. 4 to No. 6 or No. 7.
Tilak also shared that he has worked on staying still while playing his shots, choosing the right balls and keeping his mind ready for different positions. Amid this, Ayush Mhatre reveals the one MS Dhoni lesson he follows under pressure.
The left-hander admitted that it has been really tough to shift from No. 3 or No. 4 to No. 6 or No. 7. However, he said that there is not much difference between opening and batting at No. 3 or between No. 3 and No. 4, but moving down to No. 6 or No. 7 is really tough.
Tilak Varma reveals big challenge of moving from No. 3 to lower order
Tilak said that the role and conditions are very different at the lower order, so it can be difficult but he is ready to do whatever the team needs from him. He further explained, “But when the team needs you, you have to accept the role and earn your position. I have worked a lot on myself, both in practice and mentally, to adjust to this role. I have focused on staying still while playing my shots and understanding how to deal with different situations.”
He signed off by saying, “For example, when a yorker is missed slightly, you have to be ready to hit it. When you bat lower down the order, the ball is older and can come slower, while bowlers also use more yorkers. The entire batting approach can change. So mentally, I have accepted that this is the role I have to perform for the team.”
Top order is his favourite, but Tilak Varma has made every spot his own! ?? He talks about his love for batting up the order and how he has adapted to the middle order. Watch him in #INDvWI 2nd T20I ? FRI, 9th OCT, 7 PM t.co/q7yP8fEgly
