Amanda Berry shared an emotional full-circle moment during the latest episode of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, revealing that MTV's hit reality series gave her hope while she was being held captive for more than a decade.
Berry appeared at Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino's book signing for his memoir Reality Check at the Shore Store in Seaside Heights, New Jersey, where she met Sorrentino and Ronnie Ortiz-Magro for the first time.
Before greeting the cast, Berry explained why the meeting meant so much to her.
"I'm here because I love the whole cast of Jersey Shore since Season 1," she said. "I actually went through something—it was a well-known story. I was kidnapped and I was in a house for 11 years."
Berry was abducted in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2003 at age 16 and held captive by Ariel Castro alongside Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight. The three women escaped in 2013 after Berry managed to break free and call for help, ending one of the most widely covered kidnapping cases in recent history.
Looking back, Berry said the cast had no idea the impact they were having on her life at the time.
"Watching on Thursdays gave me something to look forward to and to smile [about]," she told the cameras. "I just want to say thank you for that."
She also said watching Sorrentino, 44, overcome addiction and rebuild his life inspired her own journey after gaining her freedom.
"Watching Mike go from down here to up there," Berry said, motivated her to believe she could do the same and "be happy in life."
"Here we are," she added with a smile. "We're all thriving."
The emotional revelation visibly moved Sorrentino, who became tearful as Berry thanked him in person. The reality star embraced her and expressed how grateful he was that the show could provide even a small source of comfort during such a painful chapter of her life.
