It was reported that he purchased a Mega Millions ticket on a whim on Oct. 2 at the 7-Eleven at 1610 Ridgeside Drive in Mount Airy.
After making his purchase, he slipped the ticket into the sun visor of his car and continued on with his day. It wasn’t until two weeks later that the MegaMillion jackpot had reached a jackpot at an annuity value for the Oct. 23 drawing at $433 million, and a one-time payment of $178.6 million that he noticed.
The man was getting gas when the ticket he purchased at the start of the month fell from the car visor into his lap. He wasn’t expecting much for a weeks-old ticket and used the Maryland Lottery app to check if there were any winning numbers. To his surprise, it was.
The Mega Millions ticket was a winner for $30,000, with the man having confirmed the winnings back at the 7-Eleven he originally purchased it from.
“It if was 600 bucks, great,” he said, reflecting on the fact that a forgotten ticket led to a multi figure win.
When he learned he had won $30,000, he immediately returned home to tell his roommate, who had just woken up from a nap. He told his roommate he had some news, and the roommate “sat up so fast” and asked what it was.
The Mount Airy winner claimed his earnings on Oct. 21 at the Lottery headquarters in Baltimore. His roommate offered to drive him, as he prefers to stay off the highways. What will he do with the money? He plans to save it in case of emergencies and treat his roommate to a nice dinner. As the parents of two dogs, he also plans to spoil them.
In the month of October, there have been multiple lottery wins across the country. A $20 North Carolina ticket led to a $2 million payday, a Georgia ticket scratch-off led to $1 million, and an Ohio Powerball led to a $2 million winning ticket.
