ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Union workers at the University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) have voted to picket as contract negotiations continue.
Members of 1199SEIU said UR Medical is offering minimal wage increases and considering weakening anti-discrimination language in contracts.
Contract bargaining is scheduled to continue Tuesday.
News10NBC reached out to URMC for comment about the vote to picket. Previously, we asked for comment from URMC before the picket vote passed.
In URMC’s statement on Wednesday, before the picket vote went through, it said:
“The University of Rochester has been negotiating in good faith since August 2026 with union representatives from 1199SEIU and Local 200United SEIU for a multi-year contract renewal that is competitive, fair, and equitable. 1199SEIU is a labor union that represents about 1,400 employees at the University of Rochester Medical Center, working in positions such as patient care technicians, environmental services workers, food service workers, patient unit secretaries, transport assistants, materials processing workers, couriers, and others. Local 200United SEIU is a labor union that represents about 500 support services employees at the University River Campus and Eastman School of Music, working in positions such as environmental service and food service workers, truck and bus drivers, and others. Both 1199SEIU and Local 200United SEIU have together been negotiating with the University for one renewed contract.
“As part of our commitment to good-faith negotiations, we remain engaged in discussions aimed at reaching mutually agreed-upon contract language that reflects the University’s policies and values, including nondiscrimination, equal employment opportunity, and dignity and respect for all. The University must ensure that any language complies with current federal mandates and does not expose the University to significant legal or financial risks, including the potential loss of federal funding or tax-exempt status under recently proposed IRS regulations. Not doing so could undoubtedly have significant negative impacts on our employees, students, and the broader enterprise. Unequivocally, the University remains steadfast in its commitment to preventing discrimination, harassment, and retaliation and promoting a workplace where everyone feels included and respected, as outlined in the University’s Policy against Discrimination and Harassment and Discriminatory Employment/Services Practices, Non-Discrimination in Employment Policy, and the University’s Code of Conduct.”
