Comedian Kathy Griffin recently shared some insight into her (and Rosie O’Donnell’s) history withDonald Trump. While speaking about O’Donnell’s return to the U.S. on her ‘Talk Your Head Off’ podcast, the actress revealed some pretty interesting facts about Trump in the pre-presidential days. But that’s not all!
As Griffin notes, O’Donnell’s feud with Trump goes back years. Back in 2006, she mocked the future commander-in-chief, sparking a decades-long divide. Griffin explains, “Because you know, a lot of people know my experience with my political scandal with uh, the current president Donald Trump. But I always say, well, Rosie was really the first. If you’re going to talk about female comedians that went for Trump. Rosie on The View, going after him, in a way that was fearless, in a way that my beloved Baraba Walters did not love.”
And just in case you forgot, in 2017 Griffin posed for a photo shoot holding a severed, bloody Trump head, causing a major backlash that resulted in her basically being canceled. Of course, she made a comeback. But before this scandal, Griffin was actually kind of chummy with Trump. How could that possibly be?
Griffin dished, “O’Donnell and I knew Donald. We called him Donald. He likes to be called The Donald. I know that sounds weird that Rosie and I knew Donald, but it’s true.” She then detailed how Rosie has flown on Trump’s plane and added, “I’ve been to Bedminster with Donald where he hired me to roast him for a charity event…It’s just crazy to think there was a time when The Donald really wanted to mix it up with folks like Rosie and me.”
The actress goes on to say, “I’m not going to stick up for the guy, but there was a time in the ‘90s when he was so ubiquitous that I would walk into a room, see Donald and think like, ‘Oh, of course he’s here.’ So it’s not like I had this great relationship with him. But it was cordial.”
How things have changed since the ‘90s. “When Rosie and I get together, we do laugh a lot about how there was The Donald, and now there’s a fascist dictator named Donald also. And I’m not saying he’s a different person. He obviously was this person all along, Griffin said, adding that this was a time before he did things like “falling asleep during press conferences.”
Now that her friend Rosie is back in the U.S. (O’Donnell now famously moved to Ireland following Trump’s reelection), Griffin said, “She’s back on the map. She’s everywhere again. And in the best way, because I think Americans at least, but I know her international audiences, really recognize that, like someone else in this room (Griffin motions to herself), was really put through the mill by Donald, of all people.”
And what does Griffin think of The Donald now? Well, it seems like The Donald is okay in her book. But as for President Donald Trump, Griffin has this to say: “He’s what I call aggressively stupid. He’s not just stupid in a way that is self-effacing or shows any intellectual curiosity. He’s aggressively stupid.” Well, it doesn’t look like she’s getting an invite back to Bedminster anytime soon.
