Jaxon Willits just made his college baseball dreams come true a few weeks ago.
Now, exactly 20 days after being named College World Series Most Outstanding Player while helping Oklahoma win the national championship, another dream of Willits became a reality. He was selected by the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth round of the MLB Draft, the 141st pick overall, becoming an official major leaguer and an Angels legacy at the same time.
The former Sooners shortstop sensation is the son of former Angels outfielder Reggie Willits, and he’s also the brother of last year’s No. 1 overall pick, Eli Willits of the Washington Nationals. According to MLB.com, Willits was the 117th-ranked prospect in this draft class, so he had to wait a little longer than expected to hear his name called at the draft in Philadelphia.
Willits’ heroics during last month’s College World Series will be remembered forever in Norman. He hit .500 with 13 hits, 5 doubles, 1 home run, 7 RBIs and 6 runs scored in helping Oklahoma capture its third national title and first since 1994. The 6-foot, 203-pound Willits also posted an eye-popping .808 slugging percentage during his offensive blitz in Omaha.
He was the second Oklahoma player drafted this weekend, following catcher/outfielder Brendan Brock, who was selected by the New York Yankees on Saturday in the third round, No. 99 overall.
Willits, whose father played with the Angels from 2006-11, had a spectacular 3-year run at OU, combining to hit .307 with 25 home runs, 136 RBIs, 38 doubles and 19 stolen bases.
He stayed in-state to become an Oklahoma baseball hero after being the No. 2 high school prospect in the state out of Fort Cobb-Broxton High School.
Now, Willits is property of the Los Angeles Angels, joining the franchise with which his father once played for.
Willits has a ways to go before making an impact at the big-league level, but there will be a World Series title awarded this October to the last team standing in Major League Baseball.
