Chicago Blackhawks general manager Kyle Davidson made a trade on Friday afternoon that may come as a surprise. Chicago sent forward André Burakovsky to the Ottawa Senators.
The surprise(s): the Blackhawks got something back for Burakovsky — a sixth-round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. And they didn’t have to retain any of his $5.5M cap hit for the coming season (the last on his current contract).

He started the season on Connor Bedard’s wing and thins went fairly well before Bedard got hurt. At the end of January, Burakovsky had 30 points in 49 games. After the start of February, he recorded just three points in his final 26 games.
The Blackhawks clear a full $5.5M from their 2026-27 cap commitment with the trade. There’s no way to downplay this as anything but a win for the Blackhawks. And they just got a little more cap space…
