India’s growing e-sports industry is facing a period of regulatory uncertainty as the online registration system mandated under the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Act, 2025 remains unavailable more than a month after the law came into effect.
As per the Act, which was officially enforced on May 1, 2026, a new regulatory mechanism has been established for regulating India’s online gaming industry. Though the Act bans real-money gambling, it allows online social gaming as well as e-sporting tournaments. All e-sporting tournaments have to be registered with OGAI in order to conduct their business legally.
Registration Requirement Creates Industry Confusion
Despite the release of the necessary registration form by the government through its official website, there is currently no working online portal available for submitting the application forms.
This situation has put tournament organizers, esports organizations, and gaming firms in a tough spot. Although a number of stakeholders are trying their best to meet the requirements of the law, the absence of a functional submission portal makes it impossible for them to register.
Therefore, a number of esports tournaments which took place from May have faced uncertainties.

Nevertheless, the release date has not yet been announced officially.
This happens at the most important period for Indian esports since the industry has made substantial progress over recent years due to large investments, prize pools, and international community involvement.
In the absence of the portal being operational and until more information becomes available, the Indian esports industry finds itself at a crossroads in fulfilling their regulatory responsibilities despite not being able to do so.
