Singapore GP: Dominant Verstappen completes clean sweep

Max Verstappen finally conquered Singapore, converting pole position into a commanding victory at Marina Bay on Sunday as Charles Leclerc and Kimi Antonelli completed the podium.

The Red Bull driver resisted Ferrari’s early pressure before establishing control, while Lewis Hamilton’s costly strategy handed Mercedes’ championship leader another crucial advantage.

Antonelli’s third-place finish extended his lead over team-mate George Russell, who could manage only ninth after starting 19th, and put the Italian in a position to fight for his maiden world title as early as Austin.

    Verstappen withstands Ferrari’s early threat

Leclerc launched superbly from the front row, forcing Verstappen to defend into Turn 1, but the polesitter held his ground by the narrowest of margins. Hamilton retained third on medium tyres, ahead of Antonelli and the McLaren pair of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, preserving the top six positions from the start.

Leclerc initially kept Verstappen within reach, but the balance began shifting as the race progressed. A virtual safety car was deployed on lap 7 when Gabriel Bortoleto stopped on the start-finish straight with a suspected gearbox problem.

By lap 11, Hamilton was already three seconds behind Leclerc, while Antonelli and the McLarens followed. The Ferrari driver, however, began losing ground to Verstappen, who consistently lapped around half a second quicker.

On lap 18, with Leclerc four seconds behind and Hamilton losing further ground, the seven-time world champion became the first driver to pit, switching from mediums to softs. Antonelli stopped on lap 23 for mediums, followed by Leclerc a lap later.

The Ferrari pair emerged in close proximity, with Hamilton’s team-mate complaining repeatedly about being stuck behind his fellow red car.

Verstappen pitted on lap 32 and safely retained the lead, despite Antonelli reporting a worrying sensation from the car: “I feel something leaking between my feet.” Mercedes was unconcerned, and the Dutchman soon stretched his advantage to five seconds.

Another virtual safety car, triggered by Lance Stroll’s suspected clutch failure on lap 39, offered Ferrari and Mercedes an opportunity to alter their strategies. Leclerc and Antonelli switched back to softs, but Hamilton stayed out on his used rubber.

Antonelli’s stop was followed by an alarming moment on track. “Mate, I have no f***ing brakes! I just went straight! The pedal was so long!” he exclaimed over the radio.

Piastri, meanwhile, made another pitstop on lap 41 after suffering a slow puncture, dropping further down the order.

Leclerc returned to the track around 10 seconds behind Hamilton but needed only five laps to catch and pass his team-mate. With 15 laps remaining, the Monegasque was still 15 seconds behind Verstappen, who was also struggling with radio communications.

Ferrari’s charge threatened to make the closing stages interesting. Leclerc cut the deficit to 8.3 seconds by lap 55, but Verstappen responded sufficiently to keep the challenger at bay, crossing the line 7.3 seconds clear.

Hamilton’s decision to remain out on softs for a mammoth 44-lap stint proved disastrous. Norris applied the pressure, and Antonelli seized the opportunity to pass both, securing third place. Hamilton slipped to sixth, behind Piastri and Norris.

Russell salvages ninth as Hadjar scores

Russell’s afternoon was considerably less rewarding. Starting 19th after a power-unit grid penalty, the Mercedes driver gradually worked his way forward but struggled to make meaningful progress.

He was the last driver to pit, taking advantage of the VSC, although the neutralisation ended shortly after he entered the pitlane. Russell rejoined behind Liam Lawson, Nico Hulkenberg and Pierre Gasly, eventually passing only the Alpine driver to finish ninth.

Gasly endured a frustrating afternoon after qualifying seventh, losing ground at the start before falling out of the points. His misfortune benefited Isack Hadjar, who recovered from a pitlane start following Saturday’s mechanical troubles to claim the final point.

Oliver Bearman produced an entertaining drive, engaging in wheel-to-wheel battles with Haas team-mate Esteban Ocon and executing a bold move on Carlos Sainz, but had to settle for 12th. Ocon, Sainz, Arvid Lindblad, Fernando Alonso and Sergio Perez followed.

Valtteri Bottas was nearly lapped by Cadillac team-mate Perez, while Franco Colapinto and Alexander Albon retired with suspected mechanical problems.

For Verstappen, Singapore finally delivered a first victory. For Antonelli, the podium brought a potentially decisive championship reward: his lead over Russell grew sufficiently to give him an opportunity to clinch the title in Austin.
