Junior Nationals qualifier Laney Alderman has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at Virginia Tech University beginning in the fall of 2028. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
This is home!! I am beyond blessed and excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Virginia Tech! I want to say thank you to my family, my friends, teammates, and my coaches for supporting me throughout this process. I couldn’t be where I am today without the help from all of you. I also want to thank Coach Sergio, Coach Mason, and the rest of the VT coaching staff for giving me this amazing, opportunity. Most importantly, thank you to the Lord for giving me this gift and being with me along this whole journey! I cannot wait to be a Hokie! I’ve grown up in this community, so it’s always been home to me, but VT truly is my home! GO HOKIES!!
A senior at Christiansburg High School in Christiansburg, Virginia, Alderman has swum on her school’s varsity team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with H2okie Aquatics, where she primarily specializes in breaststroke and IM. She is coming off a breakthrough 2025-26 season in which she dropped about three seconds in both the 200 breast and 200 IM and almost two seconds in the 100 breast.
At the Virginia High School League (VHSL) Class 3 State Championships in February, she won her first state title in the 100 breast, in a then-personal best of 1:01.89, after finishing second as a freshman. She also took bronze in the 200 IM in 2:04.79, her current lifetime best. A few weeks later, at the Virginia Senior Championships, she set her current bests in both breaststroke events, winning the 100 breast (1:01.53) and placing second in the 200 breast (2:13.16).

Alderman’s current personal best in the 100 breast would have qualified for the ‘C’ final, while it took 2:12.74 in the 200 breast and 1:59.35 in the 200 IM to score. With nearly three full seasons of training still ahead before she lines up at her first conference meet, she is already slated to make an immediate impact.
Alderman joins sprint freestyler Samantha Roemer and distance freestyler Maddie Fox in committing to the Hokies’ class of 2032 so far.
