Well, this is kind of nice.
Tonight, the Chicago Cubs acquired a much-needed big league starting pitcher. A guy who was an All-Star last season. A guy whose particular strength might work a little better in Chicago than it did with his current team. Or maybe I’m just in a good mood after winning the first three in New York. Anyway: The Chicago Cubs are trading for Mets left-handed starter David Peterson (per Jeff Passan).
Before we dive into Peterson, allow me to remind you WHY this is happening: The Chicago Cubs technically still have SIX of their primary starting pitchers on the Injured List. Matthew Boyd is coming back tomorrow, but he (plus Cade Horton, Justin Steele, Jameson Taillon, Edward Cabrera, and Ben Brown) makes six. And that means, even after Boyd returns tomorrow, the Cubs have just four big league starters throwing at the moment: Shota Imanaga, Colin Rea, Javier Assad, and Boyd.
Jordan Wicks is available, but that hasn’t really gone their way.
Needless to say, the Cubs needed a real big league starter, and David Peterson technically is that!
Cubs Trade for Mets Lefty David Peterson
Now, here’s the deal: He has a 6.09 ERA this season. But before you freak, a few things to note:
New York Mets pitcher David Peterson (23) | Kyle Ross-Imagn Images(1) Peterson was an All-Star last season, ultimately finishing with a 4.22 ERA and 3.1 WAR over 30 starts … Of course, his first half (3.06 ERA) looked a hell of a lot better than his second half (6.34 ERA).
(2) He’s a BIG-time groundball guy. 51.5% for his career (691.2 IP), and right in the same spot this season. In front of this Cubs defense, which rates as the best in baseball, that could make a difference.
(3) Did I mention the Cubs desperately need pitchers?
Even though I am clearly looking for positives, I’m not trying to hide the fact that this is a roll of the dice. But if they are going to roll the dice, at least it’s on a former first-round pick, last year All-Star, with one ability that might make him work better with this team than his last. Right?
Also, this is about as significant of a trade as you’ll get in late June. It just doesn’t happen often.
I’ll update this post as soon as we know more about the return.
UPDATE: According to multiple reports, the return is Cole Mathis, the Cubs second round pick from 2024.
Mathis, 22, got a $1.68M signing bonus from the Cubs just two years ago and has pretty much always hit in the minors. He began this year in A-Ball, but moved up to High-A, where he’s slashed .260/.371/.490 (116 wRC+) with a 14.7% walk rate. As of today, Mathis was the Cubs 13th best prospect according to MLB Pipeline and 9th best according to Baseball America.
So this is a modestly significant piece to give up for David Peterson. There’s probably some real offensive upside there, and not a particularly long journey up the ladder given his age, position, and approach/style.
Cole Mathis has only played 68 games in the Cubs system over his 2 years in the org. Very patient, very launch angle-y (what a terrible adjective Bryan), will have to fight against some whiff propensity and poor lateral quickness. Would have been 12-17th ranked in system for me.
— Cubs Prospects – Bryan Smith (@cubprospects) June 25, 2026As a totally random aside, I’ve been kind of fascinated by Greg Huss’ observation about the Cubs trading so much from the draft classes in 2023 and 2024 (Mathis’ class). He’s been talking about this for a while, and I’d love to hear if there’s something to it.
The Cubs have now traded 27.5% of their draft picks from the 2023 and 2024 classes including their first 3 picks from 2024.
