Rams Dump Kicker After Massive Misses On MNF (Which Has Me Thinking About Cairo Santos…)

The Monday Night Football game between the Rams and Bills was a thriller.

It was the type of game that brought playoff energy to a regular-season showdown. And it was the kind of game that I wouldn’t see played again when the Super Bowl kicks off on Valentine’s Day. Of course, it would be better if the Bears were in that game. But they’ll need to upgrade their defense before we start making travel plans to hit Southern California in February.

One player set to make some more immediate travel plans is Harrison Mevis, who was cut by the Rams after a pair of costly misfires in the team’s loss.

“In the kicking game, especially with our PAT, field goal, not even close to good enough,” said Rams Head Coach Sean McVay (via ESPN) after the loss. “It cost us the game tonight.”

Not only did those miscues cost the Rams the game, but they also cost Mevis his job.

In most circumstances, news of the Rams cutting their kicker would have landed in Wednesday’s BN Bears Bullets. But Bears kicker Cairo Santos missed a field goal in Sunday’s loss to the Green Bay Packers. Because of the miss, a loud segment of fans voiced their displeasure about Chicago’s kicker. Some even called for him to get cut. I’m not there yet. But I understand the concerns and see why folks want change.

Santos has made just 7 of 9 field-goal attempts this year. That 77.8 percent success rate is unacceptable in my book. That alone irks me. But what truly worries me most is that the early-season misfires are part of a troubling recent trend.

Since the start of the 2024 season, Santos has made just 82.8 percent of his field goals. Compare that to his 2020-2023 production, when he made 91.1 percent of his field-goal attempts. An 8.3 percentage-point drop should raise some red flags at Halas Hall. But given his status as a captain, I’m not sure anyone in that building is concerned … yet.

WHY DOES BEN JOHNSON STRUGGLE VS. THE NFC NORTH?

For what it’s worth, Cairo Santos has a history of bouncing back. In 2021, Santos made just 86.7 percent of his field goals. That prompted the Bears to sign undrafted free agent Andre Szmyt to push Santos during training camp and the preseason. Santos responded by nailing 91.8 percent of his kicks in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. More recently, Santos made 18 of 20 kicks in his final 11 games of the 2025 season. This includes a perfect 4-for-4 in Chicago’s two playoff games.

I’m glad Santos has shown that he can turn it around in-season. It makes me feel a little better about where things stand. But I’m still concerned about his current trends. I hope he figures it out soon. Because if he doesn’t, I’d hate to be around here if an ill-timed miss costs the Bears a win.
