This week is off to a dubious start for the Chicago Bears.
Losing to the Green Bay Packers on Sunday was enough. But now the Bears have to deal with a Montez Sweat suspension. The Tribune’s Brad Biggs reports (via Twitter/X) that Sweat has been suspended for violating the NFL’s performance-enhancing substances policy. If the suspension isn’t overturned or reduced, Sweat will miss Sunday’s Week 6 game against the Atlanta Falcons and Chicago’s Week 7 showdown against the New England Patriots on Thursday Night Football.

Sweat, 30, has just 2 sacks, 2 tackles-for-loss, and 4 quarterback hits in five games in 2026. Last season, Sweat collected a team-leading 10 sacks while contributing 13 TFLs, and 18 QB hits. Acquired in a deal on NFL Trade Deadline Day in 2023, Sweat has been a solid contributor in Chicago. He made the Pro Bowl in 2023 and was an important player down the stretch in 2025. A Bears defense that was already in hot water will have to play through it without someone they believed would be one of their key pieces. That stinks.
The Bears could soften the blow by bringing defensive lineman Shemar Turner off injured reserve this week. But unless Turner provides an unexpected immediate impact, that addition to the rotation won’t move the needle. How quickly can Bears GM Ryan Poles pull off a Khalil Mack trade? Or, if not Mack, is there someone else who can be brought in? Chicago already needed help on the defensive line. A Montez Sweat suspension figures to only add to the desire to make a move to improve that position. Stay tuned.
