NEW YORK — The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is changing deer hunting regulations to help reduce the state’s growing deer population.
The department says hunters will now have more access to permits and expanded opportunities to harvest antlerless deer, mostly female deer, in several areas. A new Earn-a-Second-Buck program will also allow hunters who report an antlerless deer to qualify for an extra buck tag.
The state’s Earn-a-2nd-Buck-System allows hunters to use a deer tag in any season, with privileges, except the September antlerless season.
“Deer populations are growing across much of New York and, in many areas, are increasing to levels that are detrimental to deer, their habitat, and the public,” said Amanda Lefton, DEC commissioner. “These regulatory changes are a result of robust public engagement and reflect DEC’s continued commitment to conservation.”
Officials say these changes are part of ongoing deer management efforts.
