Day 1 Prelims Heat Sheet

There were not many scratches this morning, as the event is stacked with talent, but there were a couple of events that were hit hard, but none more so then the women’s 200 free, which saw two top eight seeds withdraw. Fans expecting to see Katie Ledecky this morning will be disappointed as the top seed has pulled out of the event. She is still listed on the heat sheet in this evening’s timed final of the 1500 free, an event where it she is the World Record holder. Also pulling out of the event, is the recently minted American Record holder in the 100 free, Anna Moesch. The University of Virginia product was the 5th seed but has withdrawn from this morning’s 200 free. Moesch is still in the meet, as she kicks off racing this morning as she appears in the very first heat of the 200 IM.

The women’s 50 breaststroke saw just one scratch, but it was a big one, as Kate Douglass has pulled out of the event. She was entered as the 4th seed, coming in with a seed time of 31.04, but the UVA based swimmer looks to be whittling down her schedule and will be focusing on the 200 IM where she is the top seed.

The only other top eight seed to pull out of an event was Jonny Marshall, who ranked 4th in the men’s 100 backstroke. Marshall has no further events this morning, nor does Johnny Crush, the 21st seed in the event. Jack Dahlgreen seeded 13th, too has withdrawn from the event, but he is slated to appear later in the morning in the 200 free, as the 9th seed.

He is not the only swimmer focusing on the 200 free as Thomas Heilman has pulled out of the 200 IM where he was the 43rd seed, to instead cast his lot in the last event of the session, where he is seeded 20th. His training partners, David King and Maximus Williamson appear have other thoughts as they have dumped the 200 free in favor of other events, with King retaining his spot as the 7th seed in the 100 back and Williamson as the 5th seed in the 200 IM. The pair famously tied for 8th in the 200 free at the most recent NCAA Championships, with King ceding his spot in the final to Williamson, who would go on to win the event from an outside lane.
