Are You Ready For the Tyson Bagent Experience?

This is Tyson Bagent’s time to shine.

Bagent has been one of my favorite players to follow while writing here. After going undrafted in 2023, Bagent, a Division II standout, worked his way from QB4 status during training camp, climbed up the depth chart, and eventually knocked off P.J. Walker to become the Chicago Bears’ second-string quarterback. It is a remarkable story that scriptwriters could only dream of cooking up in their labs. Even if they could, I’m not sure they’d know what to do with the plot twist of Bagent stepping in for an injured Caleb Williams on a Bears team that started this season with Super Bowl aspirations.

This Is Tyson Bagent’s Time to Shine

The Bears entertained the possibility of trading Bagent in the offseason. Chicago’s QB2 drew interest from teams reportedly looking for a viable starter. Bagent said all the right things when asked about the offseason whispers. Now, he will get an opportunity to prove

Beyond this being Tyson Bagent’s time to shine, this is also a chance for Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson to really show his coaching chops. If you missed it during the offseason, Johnson went to bat for Bagent when asked about the trade rumors back in February. The Bears head coach didn’t sound like someone ready to jettison the backup quarterback. Now, the two will get to work together with Bagent as the starter. The more I think about it, the more I realize that this is quite the opportunity for Johnson and Bagent.

Unless Caleb Williams pulls a Seth Rollins on us and starts against the Eagles on Monday Night Football, Week 3 will be the first time Johnson runs his offense without his starting quarterback. I hope he is up to the challenge. And make no mistake about it. This is a unique challenge.

“I would be a lot more concerned if we didn’t have a year and a half under our belts together now,” Johnson said Monday via The Athletic. “I’ve seen him every single day in practice. We’ve had a lot of reps during the course of training camp and in the preseason. So if it goes that route, I feel strongly about what he’s capable of. And our team does, too. They know he’s a darn good football player.”

For what it’s worth, I believe Tyson Bagent can game-manage his way through murky waters while stepping in for Williams. Remember, Bagent went 2-2 as a starter in 2023, filling in for Justin Fields. Sure, Bagent threw more interceptions (6) than touchdowns (3) during his five-game stint playing for an injured Fields. But he deserves credit for navigating a .500 record while taking direction from then-offensive coordinator Luke Getsy, dropping back to pass behind an offensive line that left a lot to be desired, and playing with a group of skill position players whose talent pales in comparison to what the Bears have assembled in 2026.

What Does Tyson Bagent Bring to the Table?

If history is any indication of what is on the horizon, then now is a good time to buy low on Bears tight end stock. Cole Kmet was one of the biggest beneficiaries during Bagent’s four-start run in 2023. Kmet was targeted 29 times, caught 24 passes, picked up 199 receiving yards, and scored two touchdowns. To put those numbers in perspective, that is a 17-game pace of 123 targets, 102 catches, 846 receiving yards, and 8 touchdowns. Kmet averaged 7 targets per game in that four-game sample. Kmet and Colston Loveland have generated a grand total of 9 targets in two games this season. It would be nice to see that tandem get going.

Tyson Bagent lacks the arm strength and athleticism that Caleb Williams possesses. That said, Bagent doesn’t necessarily need it to operate functionally in this offense. If Bagent makes smart, quick decisions with the football, then I think he can function well. The Bears have playmakers on the outside and in the backfield. Even with Garrett Bradbury’s struggles at center, I still have faith in Chicago’s offensive line to hold blocks long enough for Bagent to do his thing. Bagent couldn’t ask for a better situation to be in as a backup quarterback. Soon, we’ll see if he can take advantage of it.
