Reward him with India cap: Former selector urges Ajit Agarkar to fast-track Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s India debut

Former national cricket team selector Devang Gandhi believes Vaibhav Sooryavanshi deserves to make his debut for the senior cricket team at the age of only 15. Coming fresh out of a stunning IPL 2026 season with the Rajasthan Royals (RR), the emerging opener is poised to make his debut at the top-most division of the game.

Soon or later, it is sure that the RR batter is going to get his debut cap. Team India is scheduled to face Ireland and then England for white-ball contests after the completion of the multi-format series against Afghanistan.

There are strong beliefs that Vaibhav Sooryavanshi can be named for the away series. Devang Gandhi says that the budding talent has ticked all of the boxes a batter needs to become a senior batter for the national cricket team.

The left-handed batter piled up 776 runs at an astonishing strike rate of 237.30 before concluding his IPL 2026 campaign. The batter from Bihar won the Orange Cap for claiming the most runs in the season and several other trophies because of his individual performances. Arguably, he is currently the cleanest striker of the ball in the Twenty20 format.

Reward Vaibhav Sooryavanshi with an India cap: Devang Gandhi

"I think the way to handle him is reward him with an India cap because the way he's performed in the last two years — he's hitting all the top bowlers of the world," Gandhi told IANS.

The former India cricketer and former selector highlights that smashing the bowlers is not the only ability Vaibhav possesses; the young batter knows how to act according to the situation. The 29-ball 97 in the eliminator and the 96-run knock in Qualifier 2 are the two pieces of evidence about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s pure cricketing instincts. Gandhi reckoned that these two innings the southpaw delivered under different circumstances.

“What was heartening for me to see is that in his last two knocks, he got 29-ball 97 (in Eliminator) and then 96 in Qualifier 2, but in different circumstances. Wickets were falling from the other end. He was rotating the strike,” he says.

“So, if required, he can shift gears, which is more alarming for world cricket, right? A boy who is so mature that he can even take singles, play the situation, yet maintain a strike rate of 200-plus. So, for me, he has ticked all the boxes,” he added.

Gandhi backs Sooryavanshi for Tests as well

So far, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is widely recognized as a white-ball batter. But the former cricketer mentioned that if Vaibhav receives proper grooming and counselling, then the batter will be ready for the Test as well. In his imagination, Gandhi could clearly view the batter toying with the bowlers.

A player of that calibre definitely needs to be groomed and counselled. Can you imagine him playing Test matches with the same authority? Even half of it will be such a delight to watch. It will be the bowlers who will have heart attacks. They must be wondering how to stop this boy. He is absolutely marvelous," he said.
