Almost immediately after Chipotle pulled its peppers, the CDC updated the Salmonella outbreak information to include jalapeños also used at Qdoba restaurants. So if you’re craving something spicy, now is not the best time for a takeout meal.
While the initial recall focused on jalapeños sold at Chipotle, the CDC’s updated guidance states that Qdoba may have also served the peppers.
Qdoba recently released a statement on the recall, sharing, “Qdoba is cooperating with public health authorities as they pursue an active investigation into an outbreak of Salmonella Javiana. Out of an abundance of caution, we have proactively removed jalapeños from all our restaurants at this time.”
Are the recalled jalapeños in grocery stores?
As of now, the FDA is investigating whether the jalapeños were sold to grocery stores.
The current recall is for peppers grown in Sinaloa, Mexico, and distributed by Coast Citrus Distributors. This company primarily sells jalapeños to restaurants and wholesalers.
Qdoba has proactively removed the jalapeños from restaurants. While the recent outbreak includes 345 cases and 36 hospitalizations across 27 states, according to the CDC, there is no confirmed evidence that any of these infections were caused by peppers from Qdoba.
The CDC notes, “Given their actions to remove the product from the stores, CDC and FDA do not consider there to be a current ongoing risk from these establishments to consumers in this outbreak.”
Qdoba assured customers of the company’s commitment to consumer safety in a press release, explaining, “We take any report involving guest health seriously and are committed to responding appropriately based on the facts and guidance from public health authorities.”
The statement continued, “Food safety is our highest priority. We maintain rigorous food safety standards and work closely with our suppliers, distribution partners, and restaurant teams to help ensure the safety and quality of the food we serve.”
What is Salmonella?
Salmonella is a bacterial intestinal disease that happens after consuming infected food or contaminated water. Per the CDC, symptoms can start between six hours and six days after exposure.
Symptoms typically include diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fever. While most healthy individuals recover within four to seven days, children under ahe five, adults 65 and over, and anyone with a weakened immune system are at risk for complications.
