The Chairman Calls Balls and Strikes, Marcus Freeman on NFL, and Other Memorial Day Bears Bullets

Day 126 of the Chicago Bears offseason. This clip of Bears Chairman George McCaskey umpiring high school baseball surfaced over the weekend:

Ahhh, so Bears ownership can make decisions in a timely and impartial manner. Who knew?

Welp, we’ve made it to the final week of May with no concrete decision on the Bears’ next stadium project. The good news is that the Illinois legislature will wrap up the spring session this week. So if anyone needs me, I’ll be waiting on pins and needles to see if something gets pushed across the goal line. It might not matter whether it does or doesn’t, because even Indiana Gov. Mike Braun plans to be in a holding pattern for a while.

There is a growing belief in New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye improving in his second season under the tutelage of offensive play-caller Josh McDaniels. This quote from tight end Hunter Henry (via ESPN) seems to make a solid point:

“I think the underrated thing he has this year is obviously going into Year 2 in the system is big. This system demands a lot on the quarterback position. To have a whole offseason to be in the same scheme and really build on what he did last year, I’m excited to see the jump and progress he can make on a day-to-day basis.”

With that in mind, I think we could probably say the same thing about Bears quarterback Caleb Williams. The second year in this system should make the build-up to the upcoming season a little easier for Williams, just as it should for Maye. I look forward to the matchup these two quarterbacks will have in October on Thursday Night Football. Which 2025 first-round quarterback is in the best position to take the biggest step in 2026: Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Michael Penix Jr., or Bo Nix? Does JJ McCarthy even have a chance to win the starter’s job with the Minnesota Vikings? Or will he be glued to the bench until 2027? Mandatory Credit: Geoff Burke-Imagn Images As someone who rolls his eyes at college football coaches who act like they aren’t flirting with the NFL, I appreciate Notre Dame’s Marcus Freeman being transparent about it. “I was always honest with our players,” Freeman said (via Pro Football Talk). “If they asked, and [I] talked to them, I said, ‘Listen, guys, like, I’m the head coach at Notre Dame. And I can’t control what opportunities or what people are saying outside of this building.’ But — and I was always in communication with our Athletic Director, right? And my family. But for me, it was the opportunity to be the head coach of this university was one that I wasn’t ready to let go. And I love this place. I love, more importantly, the people here, the opportunity to coach these young men, many of them you’ve recruited for multiple years. Like, that’s just something I’m not ready to let go of. If you’ll recall, Freeman was a person of interest in the Bears’ head coach search in 2025. The Bears did well to hire Ben Johnson. And while Freeman is hanging around campus for another year, I think he will (one day) make the leap to the NFL. I’m not a Notre Dame fan, but even I can appreciate what he has done to move that program forward to new heights that Brian Kelly couldn’t even dream of touching. Some Memorial Day messages from the Bears, Soldier Field, and the NFL:

    — NFL (@NFL) May 25, 2026 Retired NFL center Jason Kelce seems to be a polarizing figure in media circles. But there is no denying (1) he knows ball and (2) his perspective comes from an honest place. And in a media world where it thoughts from analysts are contrived, overly workshopped, or thrown out there for the sake of engagement bait, I can appreciate when someone comes from a grounded place. With that being said, I’m vibing with Kelce’s message about the NFL losing its way by slow-fading the Sunday slate:

“Sunday is the day of football, right? Outside of going to church in the morning, if you’re still religious and you do that, Sunday is like where so many games happen, and that’s what you grow up, and you gear your entire week around watching football on Sunday. It’s an institution at this point, the NFL playing games on Sunday.

With every day that we keep adding in there, we’re getting away from that just a little bit. And I worry that the game got big — one of the reasons it got so popular and big was because…it was an event. Sunday is the NFL and everybody sets their week apart to tune in to their games that are happening on Sunday, and you’re watching kind of all of them now take place across. I worry that we’re getting away from that just a little bit by building too many of this.”

Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy seeing the Bears in primetime. Not only does it allow me to take a deeper, different perspective, but it also lets me enjoy the Sunday slate of games to their fullest. But I can’t really do that if the league continues to water down the Sunday product while chasing the checks that come with island games.

The predictable has happened. Since the end of the Crosstown Classic, Chicago’s baseball teams have combined to go 2-10. There always seems to be a letdown of sorts after these two teams square off, but that could be an anecdotal thought. The White Sox have both wins, getting one victory apiece in Seattle and San Francisco. Meanwhile, the Chicago Cubs ride an eight-game losing streak into their upcoming series against the Pittsburgh Pirates. They won’t avoid Paul Skenes in the series, but at least they won’t have to face him on Monday. Is Wes Unseld Jr., who was an assistant on Billy Donovan’s staff, ready to take on the Chicago Bulls head coaching gig? Alex Kirschenbaum explores this possibility at BN Bulls as the team’s coaching search continues. The Colorado Avalanche were up 3-0 when my friends and I left dinner on Sunday evening, so to wake up and see that they lost to the Las Vegas Golden Knights in their playoff game took me by surprise. Tab Bamford has more on that (and more) in his set of Blackhawks Memorial Day Bullets.
