McLaren’s Monza weekend has exposed a weakness Lando Norris already knew was lurking beneath the surface of the MCL40, and qualifying left the reigning world champion with little choice but to confront it head-on.
Norris could manage only eighth place in an extraordinarily tight Q3, with just half a second covering the entire top 10.
Yet the final classification barely tells the story of his frustration. At the Temple of Speed, where straight-line efficiency is everything, McLaren simply could not give Norris the maximum velocity he needed.
The situation became even more galling on his final run. Norris was supposed to benefit from a tow from Oscar Piastri, but his team-mate ran wide at the opening corner and ended up in the escape road. Instead of receiving the aerodynamic assistance he desperately needed, Norris was left to carve through the air alone.
A deficit McLaren cannot hide
For Norris, the problem was painfully obvious – and particularly damaging at a circuit where every kilometre per hour counts.
“The most painful thing this weekend is just the straight-line speed deficit,” said Norris.
“Kimi [Antonelli] could do a 22.1 or a 0 pretty much with no slipstream, so with the slipstream, he's doing a 21.6 or something.
“I think we needed to be incredibly close to someone, and at least if I had a one-car tow, and I lose two tenths to Oscar who has a two-car tow... it's just painful from that sense. But otherwise, it's just what we got to deal with for now.

“But it's a good example of why I said before that we need to keep pushing and improving on certain areas, and this was an area we knew we would not be very strong in.”
Indeed, Monza has not suddenly uncovered a mysterious flaw in McLaren’s package. Rather, the circuit has magnified an issue the team already knew it needed to address.
And with margins so brutally fine, even a seemingly modest deficit becomes decisive.
Norris refuses to blame the tow
Norris could easily have pointed to Piastri’s Turn 1 mistake as the reason for missing out on a stronger qualifying result. Instead, he insisted the circumstances were more complicated, while acknowledging that his own lap was not flawless.
“I don't think anything didn't work out,” he said.
“It's just we needed a good slipstream, and I had priority in terms of I had to go out first of the pit lane on Q3 run one, which meant Oscar had a couple cars ahead of him, and I just had the one of Antonelli.
“It wasn't my best lap, either. I'm not going to deny that, but most and the majority of all or pretty much all my time is just lost in the straights.”
That makes Sunday’s challenge particularly uncomfortable. Norris may have the pace to fight when the track demands downforce and cornering performance, but Monza repeatedly turns the spotlight back towards the MCL40’s shortcomings in a straight line.
And the brakes are hardly helping his confidence.

“It's just a lot of pulling, just very inconsistent with what the brakes are doing,” he explained.
“With such a big brake, one of the biggest braking zones of the whole season into Turn 1, when the brakes are doing what they did today, it's just you have no confidence.”
For a driver starting eighth and facing a field separated by microscopic margins, that lack of confidence could prove every bit as costly as McLaren’s straight-line deficit.
