Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Stella Canoles from Lafayette, California, has announced her verbal commitment to the University of California, Berkeley, for 2028-29 and beyond. She confirmed to SwimSwam:
“I have been so fortunate to grow up around Cal swimming, and I have many happy memories centered on the Bears – from learning cheers at summer camp and getting my caps signed, to watching from the stands as my swimming heroes raced. I have always dreamed of following in their footsteps. Today, I’m honored to share my verbal commitment to swim and study at the University of California, Berkeley. Thank you to Coach Dave and the entire coaching staff for this incredible opportunity, and for believing in my potential. To my parents, thank you for going above and beyond to make this process, and everything outside the pool, so positive. Your unwavering support means more than I can say. And thank you to Ronnie and Donnie for preparing me so well for this journey. I am so grateful for all of you, and can’t wait to be a Golden Bear. Go Bears! ”
Canoles is a junior at Campolindo High School. She swims year-round with Orinda Aquatics. Her versatility and performances in sprint free, fly, and back led us to name her to the “Honorable Mention” section of our Way Too Early list of top girls’ swimmers from the high school class of 2028.
Canoles had a breakout meet at Winter Juniors West last year, with top 8 performances in the 50 free (5th) and 100 free (6th) and finals appearances in the 200 free (23rd) and 100 fly (13th). She logged lifetime bests in the 50 free (22.43), 100 free (49.17), 200 free (1:49.29), 100 back (54.95), and 100 fly (53.87). She also swam relay splits of 22.03 and 22.16 on the ends of the 200 free and 200 medley relays, respectively.
This year, she added new times in the 50 back (26.50) and 50 fly (24.78) at the Juanita Allington Memorial Meet in February, the 200 fly (1:59.43) at Roseville Sectionals a week later, and the 200 free (1:47.93) at Mission Viejo in March.
In high school swimming, Canoles won the 50 free (22.90) and 100 free (49.40) as a freshman at the 2025 CIF North Coast Section Championships. She then won the 100 (49.26) and was runner-up in the 50 (22.49) at the 2025 California State Meet. Both times were personal bests. As a sophomore, she was 2nd in the 50 and 4th in the 100 at NCS and 10th in the 50 and 6th in the 100 at the state meet.
This summer at U.S. Junior Nationals, Canoles swam to season-best times in all her events: 50 free (26.18), 100 free (56.62), 50 back (30.98), 50 fly (28.93), and 100 fly (1:01.86). She placed 13th in the 50 free, 13th in the 100 free, 29th in the 50 fly, and 32nd in the 100 fly. She achieved her best times in those events (25.47/55.73 free, 30.14 back, 27.57/1:00.95) in the summer of 2025.
Canoles will bring versatility and good relay potential to the Golden Bears in 2028. She will be joined by Germany’s Noelle Benkler, who has also announced her verbal commitment to Cal.
