‘Failure in their duty’: Why Sir David Attenborough felt let down by world leaders

Broadcaster Chris Packham has slammed world leaders for “forgetting” the forceful message delivered to them by Sir David Attenborough at COP26 in Glasgow regarding climate change.

Packham, who describes himself as a “pupil” of the broadcasting legend, says Sir David himself felt everyone “woke up the next morning and forgot” the message he delivered to a packed hall in 2021, including then-US president Joe Biden.

The remarks, made in the latest copy of The Big Issue, come as Sir David is set to celebrate his 100th birthday later this week.

What did Sir David say in his speech?

In November of 2021, at the COP26 summit, he urged world leaders to work together and cut carbon emissions for the sake of future generations.

“We are already in trouble. The stability we all depend on is breaking. This story is one of inequality, as well as instability,” he said.

“Today, those who have done the least to cause this problem are being the hardest hit. Ultimately, all of us will feel the impacts, some of which are now unavoidable.”

The nature presenter added: “The people most affected by climate change are no longer some imagined future generation, but young people alive today.”

Then-prime minister Boris Johnson was also in attendance, as was French President Emmanuel Macron and then-Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau.

    What is Chris Packham’s involvement?

Also a wildlife documentarian, Packham has told The Big Issue that the world’s leaders showed “incredible stupidity and ignorance” to ignore Sir David’s message.

“There’s a real sense of sadness and injustice,” Packham said.

“Because when the world’s leading science communicator is given a platform like that and they tell the truth, it shows incredible stupidity and ignorance for world leaders to ignore him.

“It is a total failure in their duty.”

As Sir David’s 100th birthday approaches on Friday, Packham reflected on the huge legacy of the man who has brought the natural world into millions of homes around the world.

“No person in the entire history of our species has made such a significant contribution to engaging people and developing a love for all life on earth as David Attenborough,” he said.

What is planned to celebrate Sir David’s 100th birthday?

The main event is a birthday party of sorts at the Royal Albert Hall in London, featuring other well-known broadcasters like Packham and Sir Michael Palin, hosted by Kirsty Young.

Musicians who have played songs which appeared in his natural history documentaries will appear for live performances, and there will be clips played from those films.

The programme will air on Friday night at 8.30pm on BBC One.

Two other new shows, Secret Garden and Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure, will also air this week.
